Fastned Opens First Ultra-Rapid EV Charging Hub in London Through Places for London Partnership

Fastned and Places for London have officially opened their first ultra-rapid EV charging hub at Hatton Cross Underground station, marking a significant step forward in the expansion of London’s public charging infrastructure.

The new EV charging hub, unveiled on June 12, 2026, is the first of 25 planned locations that will be developed across the capital through the partnership. The project supports London’s ambitious goal of delivering up to 40,000 public charge points by 2030 while making high-speed charging more accessible for residents, businesses, and commercial fleets.

The opening ceremony was attended by London transport and environmental leaders, alongside Fastned executives, highlighting the growing role of electric mobility in the city’s transport network. To celebrate the launch, drivers can enjoy free charging at the Hatton Cross site from June 15 to June 19, 2026.

12 Ultra-Rapid Chargers Powered by Renewable Energy

The Hatton Cross hub operates 24 hours a day and is powered entirely by renewable energy. It features 12 ultra-rapid charging bays capable of delivering up to 400 kW, allowing compatible EVs to gain up to 100 miles (160 km) of driving range in as little as five minutes.

Strategically positioned near Heathrow Airport and with convenient access to the M25, M4, and A30, the site is expected to serve a broad range of users, including airport travelers, local residents, taxi operators, private hire drivers, and business fleets.

Accessibility at the Core

Designed with inclusivity in mind, the new facility includes extra-wide charging bays and two fully accessible charging spaces that align with the latest British Standards Institution guidance. Fastned’s signature solar canopies provide weather protection, while CCTV monitoring and 24/7 multilingual customer support help ensure a safe and convenient charging experience.

The focus on accessibility is particularly important as public charging becomes increasingly essential for EV drivers. Around 40% of UK households do not have access to off-street parking, making reliable public charging infrastructure a key factor in accelerating EV adoption.

Supporting London’s Rapid EV Growth

London remains the UK’s leading market for electric vehicle adoption, with more than 175,000 battery-electric cars and vans already registered in the capital. By 2030, EV numbers are expected to exceed one million vehicles, representing more than a third of London’s car and van fleet.

The launch of the Hatton Cross hub contributes directly to meeting future charging demand and represents another milestone in the city’s transition toward zero-emission transport. According to project partners, more than half of the high-powered chargers required by the end of the decade have already been delivered.

More Charging Hubs Planned Across the Capital

Fastned and Places for London are moving ahead with plans to create a city-wide network of ultra-fast charging hubs. Future developments include a flagship 36-bay charging location at Hanger Lane and an eight-bay hub at East Finchley Underground station car park.

Additional sites are progressing through the planning process in the boroughs of Newham, Haringey, and Barking and Dagenham, while several more proposals are expected to be submitted later this year.

Beyond charging infrastructure, the partnership aims to deliver wider community benefits. A portion of revenue generated from the hubs will support local projects and climate initiatives, while apprenticeship programs, work placements, and employment opportunities will help address London’s growing demand for green skills.

As EV adoption continues to accelerate, the Hatton Cross charging hub serves as a model for the next generation of public charging infrastructure, combining ultra-fast charging, accessibility, sustainability, and community investment in one location.
