GWM Ora 03 Axed in the UK as Brand Resets EV Strategy

Great Wall Motor (GWM) has officially discontinued the Ora 03 electric hatchback in the UK, marking the end of a short and challenging run for the model formerly known as the Funky Cat.

After four years on sale, the EV is now only available through existing dealer stock, as the Chinese automaker pivots toward a broader European growth strategy.

Launched in 2022 as the Ora Funky Cat, the compact electric hatchback entered the UK market with a distinctive design and a premium positioning. It aimed to compete with established models such as the Volkswagen ID.3, MG4 Electric, Renault Zoe, and Vauxhall Corsa Electric.

In an effort to streamline its lineup, GWM rebranded the model as the Ora 03 in early 2024, aligning it with a revised naming strategy. The car also received updates, including expanded battery options and additional trim levels, with pricing ranging between £25,000 and £33,000.

However, despite these improvements, the Ora 03 struggled to gain traction in an increasingly competitive EV segment.

Weak Sales Seal the Model’s Fate

Sales performance ultimately led to the model’s withdrawal. GWM’s UK importer, International Motors, delivered just 542 units in 2025. The situation worsened in 2026, with only 26 registrations recorded in the first quarter.

These figures pale in comparison to key rivals, with models like the Volkswagen ID.3 and MG4 Electric consistently achieving significantly higher volumes. Increased competition from both European and Chinese brands—often offering better value or stronger brand recognition—further limited the Ora 03’s appeal.

As a result, the decision to discontinue the vehicle underscores one of the more notable setbacks among recent Chinese EV entries into the UK market.
