Yangwang U7 Unveiled: BYD’s Most Advanced Electric Sedan Yet

Chinese NEV giant BYD has unveiled its latest masterpiece—the Yangwang U7—poised to redefine performance, technology, and design standards in the EV market.

Available in 4- and 5-seater layouts as well as EV and PHEV variants, the Yangwang U7 comes to the Chinese customers with a price range between 628,000 and 708,000 yuan (86,500 – 98,000 USD at current exchange rates).

The all-electric variant features a quad-motor electric powertrain—one electric motor for each wheel— with a total system power output of 1,287 hp (960 kW) and a total torque of 1,680 Nm (1239 pound-feet of torque). That’s enough for the sedan to blast from zero to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 2.9 seconds and top speed of 270 km/h (168 mph). The four individually controllable electric motors also enable features such as ‘crab walk’ or turning on the spot.

The power comes from a 135.5 kWh BYD Blade battery pack, which provides a maximum range of 720 km (447 miles) in the Chinese CLTC test cycle.

The battery can charge at up to 500 kW and BYD says it can charge from 30 to 80 percent in under 20 minutes.

For those hesitant to fully embrace electric vehicles, the Yangwang U7 offers a range-extender plug-in hybrid option. This PHEV maintains its four electric motors, powered by a 52.4-kWh battery, and incorporates a compact, turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four engine. The battery provides a 200 km (124-mile) electric range, while the combined system extends the total range to 1,000 km (621 miles).

The EV variant measures 5265/1998/1517 mm with a 3160 mm wheelbase while the PHEV measures 5360/2000/1515 mm with a 3200 mm wheelbase. The drag coefficient is only 0.195Cd.

The Yangwang U7 introduces the DiSus-Z suspension system, replacing traditional hydraulic shock absorbers with electric motors. This system uses linear actuators, replacing traditional hydraulic dampers (like the DiSus-P), to deliver an exceptionally smooth, height-adjustable ride and stabilize the vehicle in case of a tire blowout. This innovation allows for suspension adjustments in as little as ten milliseconds, offering smoother rides and energy recovery capabilities that can recharge the battery. This positions BYD as the only automaker globally to achieve full electrification in three-way control systems.

Its ‘God’s Eye’ driver-assistance suite, utilizing three lidar, five radar, 13 HD cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, enables Level 2 hands-free driving.

The interior showcases red nappa leather and a trio of displays: a 12.8-inch central screen, a 23.6-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 6.0-inch passenger display. Available in four or five-seat configurations, the front seats offer 20-way adjustment, ventilation, heating, and massage functions. Rear passengers enjoy dual 12.8-inch screens, foldout tables, a mini-refrigerator, and temperature-sensing armrests. A 23-speaker sound system completes the luxurious experience.

BYD’s ultra-luxury sub-brand Yangwang was launched in 2023. Yangwang has quickly made waves in the Chinese automotive market, debuting with the boldly designed U8 SUV and the dramatic U9 supercar.
