GM launches right-hand-drive Cadillac LYRIQ in Japan

General Motors is taking a significant step in its global expansion story, with the introduction of a portfolio of right-hand-drive Cadillac electric vehicles in Japan.

With a dedication to cutting-edge technology, exceptional craftsmanship, and spirited performance, Cadillac has gained traction in the luxury automotive market, challenging other top-tier brands and gaining new customers worldwide.

In 2024, the Cadillac LYRIQ was the best-selling luxury EV in the U.S., according to third-party data. And GM continues to expand Cadillac’s EV portfolio into new markets. Over the past 18 months, Cadillac has launched EVs in Switzerland, Sweden, France, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand.

Cadillac also has strong franchises in Canada, Mexico, China, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. With the LYRIQ, the OPTIQ, the VISTIQ and the ESCALADE IQ, Cadillac has all-electric options in in every major global luxury SUV segment.

Cementing its status as a truly global luxury automotive brand, Cadillac is making a major push into right-hand-drive markets. This week, Cadillac announced plans to offer a full lineup of Cadillac EVs in Japan, including the LYRIQ, VISTIQ, OPTIQ, and LYRIQ-V. This move marks a historic transformation for the brand in the region.

Cadillac has had a presence in Japan since 1915. However, Cadillac traditionally has been sold as a niche left-hand-drive brand there. The transition to a right-hand-drive EV lineup represents a strategic shift to meet the evolving demands of Japanese consumers.

Cadillac’s right-hand-drive EV lineup for Japan includes an exciting range of vehicles:

  • LYRIQ: The first Cadillac EV to launch in Japan, the LYRIQ is a midsize luxury SUV featuring a sleek design, innovative technology, and GM’s advanced EV battery system.
  • OPTIQ: An entry-level luxury EV SUV, the OPTIQ caters to a new generation of EV buyers and will launch in Japan in 2026.
  • VISTIQ: Sometime considered a “Baby Escalade,” the VISTIQ is a three-row luxury SUV that offers thrilling performance and cutting-edge technology. It likewise is slated for a 2026 Japan launch.
  • LYRIQ-V: Bringing Cadillac’s performance DNA to the electric era, the LYRIQ-V embodies engineering excellence and dynamic driving capabilities. It is also scheduled to arrive in Japan in 2026.

Cadillac is also transforming its sales and ownership experience in Japan through an innovative agent model. The idea is to ensure transparent pricing across all dealerships, with the agent focused on customer education and engagement, rather than traditional sales tactics. Customers will have access to a seamless purchasing process, build-to-order options, and a dedicated aftersales service network.

Cadillac’s commitment to innovation extends beyond its vehicles for Japan. GM is investing in digital capabilities, including an integrated IT platform to enhance the sales and service experience. Cadillac is also ensuring its EV lineup is fully compatible with Japan’s CHAdeMO charging infrastructure, providing customers with convenient access to nationwide charging networks.

By expanding its right-hand-drive EV portfolio, Cadillac is not only reinforcing its presence in global markets but also setting the stage for a new era of electrified luxury. As demand for EVs continues to grow, Cadillac is ready to lead the charge, offering customers a sophisticated, high-performance, and technologically advanced driving experience.

With 13 dealerships and 24 authorized service locations across the country, Cadillac is well-positioned to support customers throughout Japan in their EV ownership journey.
