Electric vehicle sales in California grew 13 percent in the first three months of this year, compared to the same period last year, according to tracking by Veloz – a Sacramento-based nonprofit dedicated to growing the adoption and understanding of electric cars by consumers.
California is the world’s 5th largest economy, and electric cars are the state’s 7th largest foreign export category by value (after aircraft, industrial equipment, diamonds, networking equipment, integrated circuits and almonds).
“We’re continuing to see a growing electric car market and expansion of consumer choice,” said Josh Boone, executive director of Veloz. “Our members are answering consumer demand with more electric makes and models, longer ranges, and more charging stations.”
Top findings from Veloz’ monthly “Sales Dashboard”:
- Comparing Q1 2018 with Q1 2019, electric car sales increased 13 percent.
- Q1 2019 continued the year-over-year increases in sales trend started in 2018. Each month of Q1 was greater than the same month of the previous year.
- Total electric car sales in California increased 84 percent from 2017 (96,847) to 2018 (177,781). Q1 2019 added 30,745.
“Many Californians are unaware of the benefits of electric cars,” commented Boone. “That’s why Veloz is focused on increasing public awareness, understanding and consideration.”
Veloz launched the public awareness campaign “Electric For All” to educate and inspire Californian’s to drive electric.
