XPENG is taking another major step toward commercial autonomous driving with the launch of XPENG YOYO, the official brand name for its Robotaxi program.
The company has opened online registration for XPENG YOYO in China through invitation codes, while also launching a dedicated Robotaxi page on its official website. The move signals a transition from technology development and validation toward real-world commercial operations.
Rather than treating Robotaxi technology as a separate development program, XPENG is leveraging the artificial intelligence and autonomous-driving technology already developed for its electric vehicles.
XPENG YOYO Brings Robotaxi Technology to the Public
XPENG says YOYO is built around its in-house Turing AI chips, VLA 2.0 large model and AI infrastructure. The company is using these technologies to extend its existing intelligent-driving capabilities from advanced driver assistance toward Level 4 autonomous driving.
This approach is different from the traditional development path used by many dedicated L4 autonomous-driving companies. XPENG has been able to use its experience with vehicle development, mass production and intelligent-driving systems to accelerate Robotaxi development.
The company says XPENG Robotaxi has progressed from research and development to mass production, full-chain testing and now public access within 2026.
The English name XPENG YOYO was selected with global recognition in mind. Its short and easy-to-pronounce format is designed to remain consistent across different languages as XPENG prepares to potentially expand its Robotaxi business beyond China.
XPENG Robotaxi Reaches Mass Production
XPENG’s Robotaxi program has moved quickly during 2026.
In May, the company’s mass-produced Robotaxi rolled off the production line in Guangzhou. By July, XPENG had completed the full operating chain, including online ride-hailing, automated vehicle pickup and passenger drop-off.
The company subsequently received remote-testing qualification for intelligent connected vehicles in Guangzhou. This allows XPENG to conduct autonomous road testing on designated Class I, II and III test roads without a safety operator sitting in the driver’s seat.
Before opening registration to external users, XPENG also conducted paid internal Robotaxi testing at just 1 yuan per ride. The initial program was designed primarily to test payment procedures and service operations.
The latest registration program expands the experience beyond XPENG employees and into the wider public, providing another opportunity to test the technology under real-world conditions.
Four Turing AI Chips Deliver 3,000 TOPS
One of the most notable aspects of XPENG YOYO is the amount of computing power built into the vehicle.
XPENG says every Robotaxi is equipped with four in-house Turing AI chips producing a combined 3,000 TOPS of computing power. The company describes this as the world’s highest in-vehicle computing performance.
The Robotaxi also uses XPENG’s VLA 2.0 large model and does not rely on HD maps or LiDAR, according to the company.
That combination could make the system easier to deploy across different cities and road environments because it is not dependent on building and maintaining highly detailed maps for every operating area.
The strategy also highlights XPENG’s broader effort to develop its autonomous-driving technology around its own hardware and AI stack.
XPENG YOYO Focuses on the Passenger Experience
XPENG is also using the Robotaxi to explore what the passenger experience could look like when there is no driver behind the wheel.
Before boarding, users can reportedly preset the cabin temperature and activate the vehicle’s fragrance system through the online registration system.
Inside, the Robotaxi features zero-gravity seats, massage functions and a large entertainment display with integrated content services.
These features reflect a broader shift in the purpose of autonomous vehicles. Instead of simply transporting passengers from one location to another, XPENG sees autonomous driving as an opportunity to turn travel time into a more comfortable and productive experience.
XPENG Plans a Partner-Based Robotaxi Business Model
XPENG’s Robotaxi strategy also differs from companies that intend to operate large autonomous fleets themselves.
Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng has said XPENG intends to position its Robotaxi business primarily as a technology provider and ecosystem enabler.
The business model is expected to generate revenue through vehicle hardware sales, software and services, as well as commission sharing. Local and global partners would handle offline fleet operations.
Under this approach, XPENG would provide an integrated solution combining its vehicle platform, autonomous-driving software and AI technology, while partners manage operations in individual markets.
This could allow XPENG to scale its Robotaxi technology more rapidly without having to build and operate every autonomous fleet itself.
XPENG’s AI Strategy Moves Beyond Electric Vehicles
The launch of XPENG YOYO represents a significant expansion of the company’s AI strategy.
XPENG has already positioned artificial intelligence and advanced driver assistance as important parts of its electric vehicles. Robotaxi technology takes those capabilities into a much more demanding level of autonomous operation.
The company describes this as part of its Physical AI strategy, in which AI moves beyond software and digital environments and interacts directly with the physical world.
For XPENG, the vehicle is becoming more than an electric transportation product. It is increasingly being used as a platform for AI, autonomous driving and future mobility services.
With XPENG YOYO now opening registration to external users in China, the company is moving its Robotaxi technology into a critical new phase: real-world commercial validation.
If the system can demonstrate reliable operation with customers and partners at scale, XPENG could have a pathway toward expanding its autonomous-driving business into additional cities and eventually international markets.
