XPENG Launches Mass-Produced Robotaxi in China With L4 Autonomy

XPENG has officially launched its first mass-produced Robotaxi in Guangzhou, marking a major milestone not just for the company, but for China’s rapidly evolving autonomous driving sector.

The rollout represents the first time a domestic automaker has brought a Robotaxi to mass production using a fully in-house, full-stack development approach.

Built for Scale With In-House Technology

The new Robotaxi is based on XPENG’s GX platform and is engineered to meet Level 4 (L4) autonomous driving standards. Unlike many competitors relying on external suppliers, XPENG has developed the entire stack internally—from software to chips to vehicle integration.

At the core of the system are four proprietary Turing AI chips, delivering a combined computing power of 3,000 TOPS. This positions the vehicle among the most powerful autonomous platforms currently in production, enabling real-time decision-making in complex urban environments.

Vision-Only Autonomy Without LiDAR

One of the most notable aspects of XPENG’s Robotaxi is its pure vision-based approach. The system operates without LiDAR sensors or high-definition maps, relying instead on advanced AI perception and modeling.

The vehicle is powered by XPENG’s VLA 2.0 end-to-end large model, which simplifies traditional autonomous driving architecture. By removing the intermediate “language translation” step found in conventional Vision-Language-Action systems, XPENG has reduced response latency to under 80 milliseconds. This enables faster reactions and improved adaptability across different cities and road conditions.

Designed for Passenger Comfort and Intelligence

Beyond autonomy, the Robotaxi focuses heavily on passenger experience. The cabin includes privacy glass, zero-gravity comfort seating, and rear entertainment displays. A built-in voice assistant allows riders to control settings and access multimedia features during the journey.

This combination of luxury and intelligent features aims to position Robotaxis not just as functional transport, but as a premium mobility service.

Commercial Rollout and Ecosystem Expansion

XPENG plans to begin pilot Robotaxi operations in the second half of the year, using real-world deployments to validate technology performance, customer acceptance, and business viability. The company is targeting fully driverless operations—without safety drivers—by early 2027.

To accelerate ecosystem growth, XPENG will also open its Robotaxi SDK to partners. Mapping and mobility platform Amap has already been announced as the first global partner, signaling broader collaboration opportunities.

A Critical Turning Point for Robotaxis

The Robotaxi industry is entering a new phase, shifting from testing and validation to large-scale commercialization. XPENG’s vertically integrated model allows for faster deployment cycles, potentially giving it a competitive edge as the market matures.

The new Robotaxi also ties into XPENG’s broader physical AI strategy, sharing its VLA 2.0 foundation with projects like the humanoid robot IRON and future flying vehicles.

The Road Ahead

With mass production now underway, XPENG is positioning itself at the forefront of autonomous mobility in China and beyond. The successful rollout of its Robotaxi could significantly shorten the path from innovation to real-world deployment—bringing fully autonomous ride-hailing closer to everyday reality.
