Electric commercial vehicles have taken center stage at IAA Transportation in Hanover, with the new Renault Trafic Van E-Tech electric and Volvo Trucks’ full electric heavy-duty range earning two of the industry’s most prestigious awards for 2027.
The Renault Trafic Van E-Tech electric was named International Van of the Year 2027, while Volvo Trucks’ electric range received the International Truck of the Year 2027 award. The recognition highlights how battery-electric technology is expanding across everything from urban delivery vans to demanding regional and long-haul trucking.
Renault Trafic E-Tech Named International Van of the Year 2027
The new Renault Trafic Van E-Tech electric took the International Van of the Year 2027 title at the awards ceremony held during IAA Transportation in Hanover on September 14, 2026.
The decision was unanimous among the 26 members of the International Van of the Year jury, representing 26 European countries.
This marks the sixth International Van of the Year win for Renault. The company previously won with the Trafic in 2002, Master in 1998 and 2025, and Kangoo in 2012 and 2022.
The latest victory comes exactly 25 years after the original Trafic received the award, giving the new electric model an important place in the history of Renault’s popular commercial van.
The jury evaluates vehicles based on their contribution to efficiency, safety, environmental performance and the sustainability of road-based goods transportation. According to the jury, the new Trafic Van E-Tech electric strongly meets those criteria.
Renault says the new electric van represents a major technological step for the European light commercial vehicle market.
Built at Renault’s Sandouville plant in France, the Trafic Van E-Tech electric combines an all-electric powertrain with an 800-volt electrical architecture, ultra-rapid DC charging and a software-defined vehicle platform.
The van is expected to offer a driving range of up to 470 km, pending final approval. Its 800V system is designed to enable faster charging, while its 10.3-meter turning circle is comparable to that of a Renault Clio, an important advantage for maneuverability in urban environments.
One of the most significant technologies in the new Trafic is its software-defined vehicle architecture.
Renault describes it as the first Renault Group vehicle and first European LCV to use a software-defined architecture specifically designed around a van.
The system allows vehicle functions to be updated over time, potentially improving efficiency, safety and the driving experience without requiring traditional hardware changes for every improvement.
Renault also expects continuous software updates to help improve the vehicle’s residual value while allowing operators to customize and upgrade certain functions during the van’s lifetime.
For commercial operators, the combination of improved efficiency, reduced operating costs and greater digital flexibility could make the electric Trafic particularly attractive as businesses increasingly look beyond the initial purchase price and focus on total cost of ownership.
Volvo Electric Trucks Take International Truck of the Year 2027
The move toward electric commercial transportation extends far beyond vans.
Volvo Trucks has been named International Truck of the Year 2027 for its expanding full-electric heavy-duty truck range. It is the company’s eighth overall win and the second time the Volvo FH Electric has received the prestigious award.
The winning range includes the FH, FM and FMX Electric, alongside the flagship Volvo FH Aero Electric.
The new electric trucks offer driving ranges of up to 700 km, along with improvements in payload capability and charging time compared with earlier generations.
Volvo has developed the range for a broad mix of applications, including regional and long-haul transportation, urban distribution, construction and utility operations.
The International Truck of the Year jury particularly praised Volvo’s approach of developing a complete electric portfolio rather than focusing on a single truck or a limited number of applications.
Different cab and chassis configurations, increased range and multiple technical solutions allow operators to configure electric trucks for different transportation requirements.
That flexibility is becoming increasingly important as battery-electric trucks move beyond predictable urban routes and into more demanding commercial operations.
Electric Commercial Vehicles Enter a New Phase
The two awards underline a broader change taking place across the commercial vehicle industry.
Electric vans have already become increasingly common in urban delivery and fleet applications, where predictable routes and frequent stops can make battery power particularly attractive. The next challenge is expanding electric transportation into applications requiring greater range, payload and operational flexibility.

Volvo says approximately 7,000 electric trucks have accumulated 500 million kilometers worldwide since 2019, demonstrating growing real-world experience with battery-electric heavy-duty transportation.
The company currently offers eight electric truck models, with nearly 2,000 customers in more than 50 countries using electric Volvo trucks in their daily operations.
For manufacturers, the focus is increasingly shifting from simply proving that electric commercial vehicles work to making them practical across a much wider range of jobs.
The recognition of both Renault and Volvo at IAA Transportation 2026 suggests that this transition is accelerating.
With the Trafic Van E-Tech offering up to 470 km of range and 800V charging, and Volvo’s electric heavy-duty range reaching up to 700 km, electric commercial vehicles are steadily moving into territory that was once dominated almost entirely by diesel.
The International Van of the Year and International Truck of the Year awards therefore represent more than individual victories for Renault and Volvo. They also reflect the growing maturity of electric commercial transportation and the industry’s push toward lower-emission freight and delivery operations.
