Volvo Begins Series Production of New Long-Range Electric Trucks, Introduces 80-Tonne Electric Hauler

Volvo Trucks has reached another major milestone in the transition toward zero-emission freight transport, with series production now underway for its next-generation electric truck lineup.

The first vehicles have rolled off the assembly line at Volvo’s Tuve plant in Gothenburg, Sweden, marking the start of large-scale manufacturing for a new family of battery-electric trucks designed to handle a broader range of transport tasks than ever before.

Introduced earlier this year, Volvo’s latest electric truck range includes updated versions of the FH, FM and FMX Electric, alongside the flagship Volvo FH Aero Electric, which offers driving ranges of up to 700 kilometers (435 miles) on a single charge.

The launch significantly expands the role electric trucks can play in regional and long-haul transport, segments traditionally dominated by diesel-powered vehicles.

Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks, said the start of production demonstrates how advanced electric truck technology is rapidly becoming an industrial reality.

According to Volvo, customer interest in the new models has been strong, driven by longer driving ranges, greater flexibility across transport applications and improved driving performance.

Volvo FH Aero Electric Delivers Up to 700 km of Range

Leading the new lineup is the Volvo FH Aero Electric with extended range, a model designed to make electric long-haul transport more practical.

A key innovation is Volvo’s new e-axle technology, which creates additional space for battery packs and significantly increases energy storage capacity. Combined with Megawatt Charging System (MCS) capability, the truck can be rapidly recharged, reducing downtime and improving operational efficiency.

The FH Aero Electric is aimed at transport operators seeking diesel-like productivity with zero tailpipe emissions, offering high payload capacity alongside its class-leading range.

Meanwhile, the next-generation Volvo FH, FM and FMX Electric models feature an entirely new electric driveline engineered to improve energy efficiency, performance and productivity. These trucks offer ranges of up to 470 kilometers (292 miles), making them suitable for regional distribution, construction, waste management and other demanding applications.

Production of the new electric truck family will take place at Volvo Trucks’ manufacturing facilities in Gothenburg, Sweden, and Ghent, Belgium.

New 80-Tonne Electric Truck Combination Expands Heavy Transport Capability

Volvo is also broadening its electric truck offering with a new heavy-duty configuration designed for truck-and-trailer combinations weighing up to 80 tonnes.

The new solution targets markets where higher gross combination weights are common, particularly in Northern Europe. Depending on total vehicle weight, the truck delivers competitive driving ranges:

– Up to 450 km at a gross combination weight of 64 tonnes
– Up to 420 km at total weights of 74 to 76 tonnes

Sales will begin in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands and Switzerland, with market introductions starting in early 2027.

The heavy-duty electric combination uses the same advanced powertrain found in Volvo’s new FH, FM and FMX Electric models. The system includes improved batteries with 640 kWh of usable energy, enhanced insulation for cold-weather operation and an upgraded battery monitoring system to maximize efficiency and durability.

The truck supports both Megawatt Charging System (MCS) and CCS2 charging standards, offering operators flexibility as charging infrastructure continues to expand across Europe.

Hub-Reduction Axles Improve Payload and Off-Road Capability

Another innovation introduced with the heavy-duty model is the use of hub-reduction axles. These improve ground clearance and startability under high loads, making the truck suitable for demanding applications such as timber transport, construction and other heavy-duty operations.

The higher technical load rating also enables increased payload capacity while maintaining strong performance on standard road networks.

Volvo Strengthens Leadership in Electric Trucks

Volvo Trucks currently offers one of the industry’s broadest battery-electric truck portfolios, with eight electric models covering applications ranging from urban deliveries and waste collection to regional transport, construction and long-haul freight.

With production now underway for its latest generation of electric trucks and new solutions targeting the heaviest transport segments, Volvo continues to accelerate the electrification of commercial transport and expand the possibilities for zero-emission logistics.
