BYD delivered its strongest monthly sales performance of 2026 in August, with new energy vehicle (NEV) sales climbing nearly 18% year over year as rapidly growing overseas demand helped offset continued weakness in its domestic market.
The Chinese automaker sold 440,293 NEVs worldwide in August, an increase of 17.84% compared with the same month last year and 5.03% higher than July. It was BYD’s fourth consecutive month of year-over-year sales growth and marks a significant improvement from the weaker start to the year.
The latest figures also highlight a major shift in BYD’s global sales mix. While the company continues to sell large volumes of plug-in hybrids, battery-electric vehicles are becoming an increasingly important part of its passenger-car business.
BYD’s EV Sales Reach a New Record
Passenger vehicles accounted for the vast majority of BYD’s August sales, with 433,384 passenger NEVs delivered during the month. That was up 16.66% year over year and 5.43% from July.
The biggest gain came from fully electric vehicles.
BYD sold a record 256,230 passenger battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in August, representing a 28.38% year-over-year increase and a 9.92% improvement from July.
Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales, meanwhile, were considerably more stable. BYD sold 177,154 passenger PHEVs, up 3.05% from August 2025 but slightly below July’s total.
The difference between the two powertrains is becoming increasingly significant. Battery-electric vehicles represented approximately 59.1% of BYD’s passenger NEV sales in August, compared with 53.7% a year earlier.
That shift suggests BYD is continuing to strengthen its position in the pure-electric market while maintaining its large plug-in hybrid business.
Commercial NEV sales also increased sharply on an annual basis, reaching 6,909 units. That represented a 225.13% year-over-year increase, although commercial vehicle sales declined 15.11% compared with July.
Overseas Sales Become BYD’s Biggest Growth Engine
The most important development in BYD’s August results was outside China.
BYD’s overseas sales reached a record 189,466 vehicles, jumping 134.45% from August 2025 and increasing 4.95% compared with July.
Overseas deliveries represented 43.03% of BYD’s total NEV sales for the month.
The pace of international growth is particularly notable because it more than offset the company’s continuing decline in its home market. BYD’s overseas sales increased by more than 134% year over year, while total NEV sales grew by 17.84%.
In other words, international markets are playing an increasingly important role in BYD’s global expansion.
The company has been rapidly expanding its presence across Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America and other markets, bringing models such as the Dolphin, Seal, Atto 3, Seal U and newer electric vehicles to a growing number of countries.
China’s Market Remains Under Pressure
BYD’s domestic performance tells a different story.
The company sold 250,827 vehicles in China during August, up 5.09% from July but still 14.34% lower than in August 2025.
That means the recent recovery remains uneven. BYD has now posted consecutive monthly improvements, but its Chinese business has yet to return to last year’s sales levels.
The situation becomes even clearer when looking at the first eight months of 2026.
BYD sold 2,668,015 NEVs globally from January through August, down 6.84% from the same period last year. However, the decline has narrowed considerably from the 15.72% year-over-year drop recorded during the first half of the year.
The improvement has been driven overwhelmingly by international markets.
BYD’s overseas sales reached 1,162,260 vehicles through August, an 85.72% increase year over year. International deliveries accounted for 43.56% of the company’s cumulative NEV sales.
By comparison, domestic sales fell 32.72% to 1,505,755 vehicles during the same period.
BYD’s Global Expansion Is Becoming Critical
The August results demonstrate how important overseas markets have become to BYD’s growth strategy.
The company’s domestic sales remain significantly below last year’s levels, yet record international deliveries have allowed overall sales to recover. Without that overseas growth, BYD’s global sales performance would look considerably weaker.
The trend is also important for the company’s financial outlook.
BYD’s revenue declined 7.13% year over year during the first half of the year, while net profit fell 20.54%, with weakness in the automotive business contributing to the decline.
A sustained recovery in vehicle deliveries could therefore provide some relief, particularly if higher overseas volumes continue through the remainder of the year.
New Blade Battery Also Affected Deliveries
BYD has previously indicated that the transition from its first-generation Blade Battery to a new-generation system capable of much faster charging temporarily affected production and delivery schedules for several important models.
As manufacturing capacity increased, however, BYD’s monthly sales began reaching new highs. July and August both produced stronger results, suggesting that some of the earlier supply and production constraints are easing.
The next challenge will be determining whether the recovery can continue at the same pace.
BYD’s August numbers show a company with strong international momentum and record BEV sales, but they also reveal a growing dependence on overseas markets. Domestic sales remain more than 30% below last year’s level on a year-to-date basis.
For now, BYD’s global expansion is making up the difference. If international demand continues to accelerate while China’s market stabilizes, the world’s largest NEV maker could enter the final months of 2026 with considerably stronger momentum than it had at the beginning of the year.
