2027 Lexus NX Goes Fully Electrified With New Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid Technology

Lexus is giving its popular NX compact crossover a major update for the 2027 model year, bringing a fully electrified lineup, upgraded hybrid technology, sharper driving dynamics and a more refined interior.

For 2027, every Lexus NX will be offered with either a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) powertrain. Lexus says the extensively updated NX is expected to reach global markets by the end of 2026.

The new NX also gains a standard 14-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen across the lineup, while selected grades add the company’s Sensory Concierge system, which coordinates lighting, audio, climate, seat temperature and fragrance to create a more personalized cabin experience.

New Hybrid Technology Gives the NX More Efficiency and Refinement

The biggest change for the 2027 Lexus NX is under the skin. Lexus has introduced its latest hybrid drivetrain technology, building on more than two decades of development since the company introduced hybrid-electric technology to the U.S. luxury market in 2005.

The redesigned system uses a compact e-Axle that integrates the transaxle, motor and power control unit into a single assembly. Lexus says the arrangement reduces weight and helps lower the vehicle’s center of gravity. Silicon carbide power semiconductors in the inverter also contribute to improved efficiency.

The NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid receives a newly developed lithium-ion battery with an 8% increase in output and a 30% increase in capacity. PHEV models also gain DC fast charging as standard equipment, along with a dedicated Power Charge Port Door.

Lexus has also changed the battery-cell layout from a longitudinal to a transverse arrangement. The new configuration increases lateral body rigidity while positioning the battery lower in the vehicle, helping reduce the center of gravity.

Battery power management has been revised as well. Greater use of electric power during acceleration is intended to reduce unnecessary engine revving and provide a more linear connection between engine speed and road speed. Lexus has also reinforced the engine block to reduce resonance, helping cut unwanted noise and vibration.

Always-On All-Wheel Drive for the New NX

The 2027 NX features an updated E-Four electronic all-wheel-drive system. Unlike a system that primarily activates the rear motor during specific situations, the revised setup can provide continuous AWD operation during straight-line driving as well as launches, cornering and low-traction situations.

According to Lexus, the system is designed to improve road contact, handling stability and confidence on surfaces such as snow.

The changes extend beyond the powertrain. Lexus has increased structural rigidity throughout the vehicle, adding reinforcement to the front and rear of the unibody, a new floor cross member and additional reinforcement along the tunnel ridge. Redesigned suspension towers with integrated structural components further increase rigidity.

The result is intended to be sharper handling, less road noise and improved ride comfort.

For NX grades without Adaptive Variable Suspension, new shock absorbers with ultra-low-speed valves are designed to respond more quickly to small suspension movements. Lexus says the suspension was extensively tuned at Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama and the Nürburgring.

Steering has also been revised. The steering wheel diameter is reduced to 14.2 inches, while a new Variable Rack Gear provides a quicker variable steering ratio across the lineup. Lexus has retuned the electric power steering to deliver lighter and more linear feedback.

Sharper Exterior Design, More Upscale Interior

The 2027 Lexus NX retains the basic proportions of the current model but adopts a more dynamic interpretation of Lexus’ “Vital Tech” design theme.

The crossover gets a wide, low stance, redesigned front-end elements and a mesh grille intended to improve both cooling and aerodynamic performance. Chrome exterior details have largely been replaced by black accents, giving the NX a more cohesive and sportier appearance.

The headlights incorporate the turn signals and daytime running lights into a distinctive dual-line lighting signature. At the rear, Lexus introduces its first Double L Signature, combining illuminated L-shaped elements with an illuminated Lexus logo.

Nine exterior colors will be available, including new Shaded Ivy and Incognito, with Incognito offered on F SPORT grades.

Inside, the dashboard places a 12.3-inch digital instrument display alongside a 14-inch touchscreen. The horizontally aligned screens are designed to improve visibility and make key functions easier to access while driving. A redesigned steering wheel and Lexus’ Responsive Hidden Switches add to the cleaner cabin design.

Ambient lighting extends across the dashboard and into the door trim, emphasizing the cabin’s horizontal design. Vehicles equipped with the available Mark Levinson audio system also feature illuminated rings around the door speakers.

Five interior colors will be offered, including new Abalos and the F SPORT-exclusive Radiant Red.

F SPORT Adds a More Aggressive Look

The NX F SPORT receives several exterior upgrades designed to emphasize its performance-oriented character.

Exclusive front under spoilers, side pontoons and rear corner devices are combined with Piano Black finishes on the roof rails, spoiler and rocker panels. Lightweight, high-rigidity 20-inch aluminum wheels and red brake calipers provide additional visual differentiation.

Inside, F SPORT models feature an all-black instrument panel and contrast stitching for a more driver-focused atmosphere.

Sensory Concierge Brings a New Level of Cabin Personalization

One of the more unusual features available on the 2027 NX is Sensory Concierge, offered on Luxury and F SPORT grades.

The system coordinates several elements of the cabin environment, including illumination, music, climate control, seat temperature and fragrance. Three modes—Inspire, Radiance and Revitalize—are designed for different moods and driving situations.

Lexus also offers three fragrances: Shinmei, a citrus scent; Seiyo, a white floral fragrance; and Hanya, a softer musk-inspired scent. The fragrances can be selected independently or synchronized with the cabin’s lighting and audio effects.

Lexus Safety System+ 4.0 Comes Standard

Safety technology gets a major upgrade for 2027, with Lexus Safety System+ 4.0 (LSS+ 4.0) standard across all NX grades.

The system combines camera and millimeter-wave radar technology with expanded driver-assistance capabilities. Features include Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist, Intersection Turn Assist, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Road Sign Assist, Automatic High Beams and Proactive Driving Assist.

Additional available technology includes Rear Pedestrian Detection and Front Cross-Traffic Alert.

The updated Lexus Interface also includes a standard Drive Recorder that uses the vehicle’s exterior cameras to record and save video clips associated with manual or triggered events. Digital Key is available as well, allowing compatible smart devices to function as vehicle keys and share access with other drivers.

Connected services include Safety Connect, Service Connect, Remote Connect and Wi-Fi Connect. The NX also offers an Intelligent Assistant activated with “Hey Lexus,” while available Cloud Navigation, Destination Assist and Traffic Jam Assist add further connected and driver-assistance functionality.

2027 Lexus NX Grades and Powertrains

The 2027 Lexus NX lineup is planned to include four grades: Premium, Premium+, F SPORT and Luxury.

With the hybrid powertrain, Premium and Premium+ models can be configured with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. F SPORT and Luxury models are exclusively available with all-wheel drive. The plug-in hybrid powertrain is available across all four grades and comes exclusively with all-wheel drive.

Lexus has not provided pricing or complete performance specifications in the supplied material, so those details cannot yet be confirmed.

2027 Lexus NX: A More Electrified Luxury Crossover

The 2027 Lexus NX represents a significant step in Lexus’ electrification strategy without abandoning the brand’s traditional focus on comfort and refinement.

A fully electrified lineup, more capable hybrid and plug-in hybrid technology, standard LSS+ 4.0 safety features, upgraded infotainment and a more sophisticated interior make the redesigned NX a substantially more advanced compact luxury crossover.

The combination of improved efficiency, available DC fast charging on the NX 450h+, continuous E-Four AWD and extensive chassis revisions could also make the 2027 NX one of the more compelling electrified options in the premium compact crossover segment when it reaches global markets toward the end of 2026.
