BMW iX3 Demand Surges as Debrecen Plant Goes 24/7 to Meet 100,000 Orders

BMW is ramping up production of the new iX3 at an unprecedented pace as demand for its first Neue Klasse electric vehicle continues to build. The automaker has now added a third shift at its Debrecen, Hungary, factory, putting the plant on a round-the-clock production schedule.

The move comes after BMW reached 50,000 iX3 vehicles produced at the facility and reported 100,000 customer orders for the electric SUV across Europe within a year of its world premiere.

BMW iX3 Production Goes to Three Shifts

BMW began series production of the new iX3 at Debrecen in early 2026. A second shift was added in February, ahead of the company’s original plans, as demand increased. In September, the plant moved to three shifts, allowing production to continue around the clock.

BMW says the transition from the start of series production to a three-shift operation took only about eight months, making it the fastest production ramp-up of a new BMW Group plant to date.

The timing is significant. The Debrecen facility has already produced 50,000 iX3 models, while orders across Europe have reached 100,000. That means BMW is accelerating output at a critical point as it works through its growing order book.

More than 5,000 employees have contributed to the production ramp-up at the Hungarian factory.

Debrecen Is More Than Just an iX3 Factory

The BMW Group invested more than €2 billion in the Debrecen site, which covers more than 400 hectares. The plant was designed specifically around BMW’s iFACTORY production strategy, emphasizing digitalization, flexibility and efficiency. It is also dedicated to fully electric vehicles.

The iX3 is particularly important because it is the first series-production vehicle based on BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture. The platform introduces a new generation of batteries, electric drive technology, vehicle electronics and manufacturing processes.

That makes the rapid production ramp-up more significant than simply increasing output for an existing BMW model. The company is effectively scaling a completely new EV architecture while simultaneously preparing the plant for additional models.

Another Neue Klasse EV Is Coming

BMW has already confirmed that a second new Neue Klasse model will enter production at Debrecen this autumn.

The company has not officially identified the vehicle, but reports have pointed toward a new electric SUV coupe that could eventually be sold as the BMW iX4. For now, BMW has not confirmed that name or the model’s final specifications.

The arrival of another Neue Klasse vehicle should further increase the importance of Debrecen within BMW’s electric vehicle production network.

The iX3 itself is currently offered in two versions, including the all-wheel-drive iX3 50 xDrive and the rear-wheel-drive iX3 40. Both are currently produced in Hungary.

BMW is also preparing to expand iX3 production beyond Europe. Production of U.S.-market vehicles is planned for Mexico from 2027, while China is expected to receive a locally produced long-wheelbase version.

Why the BMW iX3 Is So Important

The iX3 represents BMW’s attempt to establish a new generation of electric vehicles rather than simply converting existing combustion-engine models to electric power.

Its Neue Klasse platform brings new battery technology, updated packaging and a redesigned electronic architecture, while BMW has also developed the Debrecen factory around those technologies.

The strong order numbers suggest that the iX3 is attracting substantial interest as BMW begins rolling out the Neue Klasse family. The company has previously outlined plans for multiple Neue Klasse models, with the iX3 and new i3 now forming the first production members of the lineup.

BMW’s rapid expansion in Debrecen therefore has implications well beyond a single electric SUV. If demand remains strong, the factory could become one of the key production hubs for BMW’s next generation of EVs.

For now, however, the immediate challenge is clear: BMW has 100,000 European iX3 orders to work through, and the Debrecen plant is now operating 24 hours a day to help meet them.
