Nissan EV Owners Surpass 3 Billion Electric Miles in the UK

Nissan has marked a significant milestone in its electric vehicle journey, announcing that owners of its electric cars and vans in the UK have collectively driven more than 3 billion miles. The achievement highlights the brand’s long-standing commitment to electrification and reflects more than 15 years of continuous EV sales in one of Europe’s most established electric vehicle markets.

According to mileage data compiled from the UK’s Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), Nissan EVs have covered an impressive 3,027,603,142 miles on British roads. To put that into perspective, the distance is equivalent to traveling to the Moon and back more than 6,000 times, or making the journey from Sunderland to Tokyo over 340,000 times.

Fifteen Years of EV Leadership

Nissan has maintained an uninterrupted presence in the UK’s EV market since launching the original LEAF in 2011. During that time, the company has built one of the country’s largest electric vehicle customer bases while continually expanding its lineup.

The LEAF remains one of the most influential electric cars ever produced and is the first EV from a major automaker to span three separate generations. Its success helped introduce affordable electric mobility to mainstream buyers years before the segment became highly competitive.

Since then, Nissan has broadened its electric portfolio with several new models:

– LEAF (2011): The pioneering hatchback that helped accelerate EV adoption in the UK.
– e-NV200 (2014): Demonstrated the benefits of electric power for commercial van operators.
– Second-generation LEAF (2018): Offered improved technology, efficiency and driving range.
– ARIYA (2022): Nissan’s first dedicated electric crossover, earning widespread acclaim and the Auto Express Car of the Year award.
– MICRA EV (2025): Introduced an all-electric supermini to the brand’s lineup.
– Third-generation LEAF (2026): The newest generation brings greater efficiency, more interior space and advanced technology, while also winning the Auto Express Car of the Year 2026 title.

Millions of Zero-Emission Journeys

Beyond the impressive mileage total, the milestone reflects the environmental impact of widespread EV adoption.

Because Nissan’s electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions, the billions of miles driven by UK owners have helped avoid a substantial amount of carbon dioxide that would otherwise have been generated by comparable petrol-powered vehicles. Nissan estimates that replacing those journeys with conventional gasoline cars could have produced more than half a million tonnes of CO₂ through tailpipe emissions.

The achievement covers everyday driving, including commuting, school runs, shopping trips and family holidays, illustrating how electric vehicles have become a practical choice for daily transportation.

Sunderland Remains at the Heart of Nissan’s EV Future

Nissan’s Sunderland manufacturing facility continues to play a central role in the company’s electrification strategy.

All three generations of the LEAF have been produced at the UK plant, which is preparing to manufacture the upcoming all-electric Juke. The facility is also a key part of Nissan’s EV36Zero initiative, combining vehicle production, locally manufactured battery packs from partner AESC, and renewable energy generated through on-site wind and solar installations.

The strategy aims to create a more sustainable EV production ecosystem while strengthening the UK’s position as a hub for electric vehicle manufacturing.

Nissan Thanks Early EV Adopters

James Taylor, Managing Director of Nissan Motor GB, described the achievement as another reminder of Nissan’s pioneering role in the electric vehicle sector.

He noted that the original LEAF helped launch the UK’s modern EV movement in 2011 and credited customers—particularly early adopters—for embracing electric mobility long before it became mainstream. Their support, combined with Nissan’s expanding EV lineup, has helped the company reach the three-billion-mile milestone.

Growing Electric Lineup Offers More Choice

Nissan’s UK electric vehicle range now covers multiple market segments, from compact city cars to family crossovers and commercial vans.

The latest pricing starts at £21,495 for the 40 kWh MICRA Engage, including the available £1,750 Electric Car Grant. The new LEAF begins at £28,849 for the 52 kWh Engage version with the applicable grant, while the MY26 ARIYA starts from £37,000 and is expected to qualify for the UK’s Electric Car Grant following homologation.

With the arrival of the third-generation LEAF and the expansion of its EV portfolio, Nissan continues to reinforce its position as one of the UK’s most experienced electric vehicle manufacturers. The milestone of more than three billion electric miles demonstrates not only the growing popularity of EVs but also the lasting impact Nissan has had on accelerating the transition to zero-emission mobility.
