Hyundai and SK On Begin EV Battery Production at $5 Billion Georgia Plant

Hyundai-SK Battery Manufacturing America (HSBMA) has officially started commercial production at its new electric vehicle battery cell manufacturing facility in Bartow County, Georgia.

The milestone marks a major step in Hyundai Motor Group’s efforts to expand localized EV production in the United States and strengthen its North American battery supply chain.

Commercial operations at the facility began on June 1, with the plant designed to produce 35GWh of EV battery cells annually. The production capacity is enough to supply batteries for approximately 300,000 electric vehicles per year.

The Georgia battery plant is a key part of Hyundai Motor Group’s broader electrification strategy and SK On’s growing battery manufacturing network in North America.

Georgia Plant to Supply Hyundai, Kia and Genesis EVs

Located near Hyundai Motor Group’s major U.S. manufacturing facilities, including Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, and Kia Georgia, HSBMA is positioned to create a more efficient and reliable regional EV supply chain.

Battery cells produced at the facility will support electric vehicles built by Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis in the United States. The first batteries manufactured at the plant will be used for the Hyundai IONIQ 9, the automaker’s flagship three-row electric SUV.

By producing battery cells closer to vehicle assembly plants, Hyundai aims to reduce supply chain risks while increasing the competitiveness of its EV lineup in the growing U.S. electric vehicle market.

$5 Billion Investment Strengthens U.S. EV Manufacturing

HSBMA was established through a joint investment of approximately $5 billion, with Hyundai Motor Group and SK On each owning a 50% stake in the venture.

Since the partnership was announced in 2023, the companies have completed construction, installed manufacturing equipment, and prepared the facility for full-scale operations.

The plant represents one of the largest investments in Hyundai’s U.S. electrification strategy and supports the company’s goal of building a stronger domestic EV manufacturing ecosystem.

Expanding EV Battery Capacity in North America

The launch of commercial production also strengthens SK On’s position as one of the leading global EV battery manufacturers. The company continues to expand its U.S. manufacturing footprint through partnerships with major automakers as demand for electric vehicles continues to grow.

For Hyundai Motor Group, securing a local battery supply is becoming increasingly important as competition in the EV market intensifies. The Georgia facility will help provide a stable source of battery cells for future electric models while supporting the company’s long-term electrification plans.

With production now underway, HSBMA’s Georgia plant is expected to play a central role in Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis EV manufacturing in North America for years to come.
