BYD Launches 1.5MW Flash Chargers in Europe, Targets 3,000 Stations by 2027

BYD is accelerating its European expansion with the launch of its first ultra-fast Flash Charging stations in Europe, marking a major step in the company’s efforts to reshape the EV charging landscape.

The Chinese automaker has confirmed that the first Flash Chargers are now operational in Germany and the United Kingdom. Over the next two years, BYD plans to deploy more than 3,000 charging stations across Europe, including around 300 locations in the UK by the end of 2027.

1.5MW Charging Brings Five-Minute Top-Ups

At the heart of BYD’s new charging network is its proprietary Flash Charging technology, capable of delivering up to 1,500 kW (1.5 MW) of power through a single connector. That makes it one of the most powerful public EV charging solutions currently available and significantly more powerful than Tesla’s latest V4 Superchargers, which are rated at up to 500 kW.

The system was recently demonstrated at BYD’s UK headquarters in Uxbridge using the DENZA Z9GT, the first vehicle destined for the UK market capable of utilizing the technology’s full potential.

Paired with BYD’s next-generation Blade Battery 2.0, Flash Charging enables charging speeds that were previously considered unattainable for production EVs. According to the company, the technology follows a “Ready in 5, Full in 9” philosophy:

– 5% to 70% charge in just 5 minutes
– 10% to 97% charge in approximately 9 minutes
– 20% to 97% charge in around 12 minutes even at temperatures as low as -30°C

For the DENZA Z9GT, which offers a WLTP driving range of up to 372 miles, a five-minute charging session can add roughly 223 miles of range, while a nine-minute stop can add approximately 323 miles.

Designed for Faster Adoption

Unlike many high-power charging solutions that require significant grid upgrades, BYD says its Flash Charging stations rely on integrated battery energy storage systems. These batteries are charged gradually during periods of lower electricity demand and then deliver massive amounts of power when vehicles connect.

This approach reduces strain on local grids while helping accelerate deployment. BYD also believes the technology can help lower charging costs by storing electricity during off-peak periods and making it available when demand is highest.

The company expects this strategy to support competitive charging tariffs as it takes on established charging providers such as Tesla and Ionity.

New Charger Design Improves Usability

BYD has also focused on improving the charging experience itself. The Flash Charger features a distinctive T-shaped design with vertically suspended charging cables that move along a rail system.

This setup makes the charger easier to use regardless of where a vehicle’s charging port is located, while also preventing cables from dragging on the ground and becoming dirty or damaged.

Taking Aim at Europe’s Charging Leaders

Although BYD is the world’s largest producer of new energy vehicles, its charging network remains relatively small compared with Europe’s established operators. Tesla alone operates more than 20,000 Supercharger stalls across the continent.

However, BYD is betting that dramatically faster charging speeds will help differentiate its network. While all CCS2-equipped EVs will be able to use the new Flash Chargers, only vehicles built on BYD’s latest charging architecture and equipped with the newest Blade Battery technology will be able to access the full 1.5MW charging capability.

Currently, the DENZA Z9GT is among the first models capable of taking full advantage of the system.

The Next Phase of EV Charging

The launch of Flash Charging in Europe signals BYD’s ambition to become more than just a vehicle manufacturer. By building its own ultra-fast charging ecosystem, the company is positioning itself as a direct challenger to Tesla, Ionity, and other major charging providers.

If BYD succeeds in rolling out thousands of stations over the next few years, five-minute charging sessions could move from a technological showcase to an everyday reality for EV drivers across Europe.
