SAIC has officially launched the new MG 4X in China, expanding its growing lineup of affordable electric vehicles. Built on the company’s Nebula pure-electric platform, the compact SUV combines rear-wheel-drive dynamics, advanced driver assistance features, and long driving range at a highly competitive price point.
The MG 4X arrives in four variants, with prices starting at 99,800 yuan ($14,700). Promotional launch pricing lowers the entry-level model to just 92,800 yuan ($13,600), positioning the SUV as a strong rival in China’s increasingly crowded EV market.
Rear-Wheel Drive Platform And Sporty Chassis Setup
Unlike many compact electric SUVs that rely on front-wheel-drive layouts, the MG 4X uses a rear-wheel-drive configuration paired with a five-link independent rear suspension. This setup is designed to deliver improved handling and ride comfort while maintaining efficiency.
In terms of size, the MG 4X measures 4,500 mm long, 1,849 mm wide, and 1,621 mm tall, with a 2,735 mm wheelbase. The styling follows the design language already seen on the MG4 hatchback, featuring a closed-off grille, slim LED daytime running lights, and an illuminated MG badge.
Modern Cabin With AI-Powered Infotainment
Inside, the MG 4X features a minimalist wrap-around cabin with a strong focus on digital technology. Drivers get a 10.25-inch digital instrument display and a large 15.6-inch floating infotainment touchscreen.
The infotainment system integrates the Doubao large language model for enhanced voice interaction, supporting four-zone voice control. Smartphone connectivity includes Apple CarPlay, HiCar, Carlink, and compatibility with Oppo’s smart ecosystem.
Up To 610 KM Of Driving Range
SAIC offers the MG 4X with two battery and powertrain configurations.
The standard setup delivers 125 kW (168 hp), while the higher-output version produces 150 kW (201 hp). Buyers can choose between a 53.9 kWh manganese-based liquid-solid-state battery supplied by Qingtao or a larger 64.2 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery from CATL.
The semi-solid-state battery version provides a CLTC-rated range of 510 km, while the larger LFP battery extends range to 610 km on the Chinese test cycle.
Interestingly, the smaller semi-solid-state battery pack is reportedly only around 70 kg lighter than the larger LFP unit. That narrow weight difference raises questions about the real-world advantages of current liquid-solid battery technology, at least in its present form.
Two Levels Of Intelligent Driving Assistance
The MG 4X is available with two driver assistance packages.
The Free Edition includes a Horizon Robotics Journey J3 chip, five cameras, and eight ultrasonic radars, enabling L2-level assisted driving features.
Meanwhile, the Smart Edition upgrades to the more advanced Horizon Robotics Journey J6E chip and adds 21 intelligent sensors, including six cameras, 12 ultrasonic radars, and three millimeter-wave radars. The system supports L2+ functions such as highway pilot assistance and intelligent parking capabilities.
MG Continues Global Growth Push
The MG 4X launch comes as SAIC continues to expand its global EV presence. In April, SAIC sold 142,487 new energy vehicles, making it China’s second-largest NEV manufacturer behind BYD.
MG has also gained significant momentum overseas. Earlier this year, the brand announced it had become the first Chinese automaker to surpass one million vehicle sales in Europe, highlighting its growing influence in international EV markets.
