BYD Atto 3 has received a major overhaul in China, where the compact electric SUV is sold as the Yuan Plus. The third-generation model introduces BYD’s latest e-Platform 3.0 Evo architecture, faster charging capabilities, upgraded technology, and a more refined design as the company looks to strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive EV market.
The updated Atto 3 officially launched in China on May 21 in four variants priced between 119,900 yuan and 149,900 yuan (approximately $16,600 to $20,800). Interestingly, the entry-level version is priced slightly higher than its predecessor, marking a rare price increase in China’s aggressive electric vehicle segment.
Built On BYD’s New e-Platform 3.0 Evo
One of the biggest changes for the new Atto 3 is the transition from BYD’s original e-Platform 3.0 to the more advanced e-Platform 3.0 Evo. The updated platform improves drivetrain integration, charging performance, and overall efficiency.
BYD has replaced its previous 8-in-1 electric drive system with a new 12-in-1 integrated powertrain that combines additional vehicle functions into a more compact setup. The crossover also continues to use BYD’s LFP-based second-generation Blade Battery technology.
The headline feature is BYD’s new flash charging capability, which allows the battery to charge from 10% to 70% in around five minutes under ideal conditions. That could make the new Atto 3 one of the fastest-charging compact electric SUVs in its class.
Rear-Wheel Drive And Up To 630 km Range
Unlike many rivals in the segment, the new Atto 3 adopts a rear-wheel-drive layout. Buyers can choose between two rear-mounted electric motors producing either 200 kW (268 hp) or 240 kW.
Battery options include:
– 57.5 kWh battery with up to 540 km CLTC range
– 68.5 kWh battery with up to 630 km CLTC range
The SUV also features front MacPherson struts and a rear five-link independent suspension setup. Higher-end variants benefit from BYD’s DiSus-C intelligent damping system, designed to improve ride comfort and handling stability.
Additional chassis technologies include iTAC 2.0 torque control and TBC tyre blowout stability control.
Larger Dimensions And Updated Styling
The third-generation Atto 3 has grown noticeably compared to the outgoing model. It now measures 4,665 mm in length, 1,895 mm in width, and 1,675 mm in height, with a 2,770 mm wheelbase.
Visually, the crossover keeps BYD’s “Dragon Face” design language but introduces a flatter front fascia, slimmer headlights, semi-hidden door handles, and a full-width rear light bar with woven-style lighting graphics.
BYD will offer the SUV in nine exterior colors, including several dual-tone paint finishes.
A new 180-liter powered front trunk has also been added, while rear cargo capacity expands to as much as 750 liters.
More Premium Interior Technology
Inside, the updated cabin receives several upgrades aimed at improving comfort and usability. A larger floating central touchscreen runs the latest DiLink infotainment system, while the dashboard now includes a head-up display and a new two-spoke steering wheel.
Other interior upgrades include:
– Column-mounted gear selector
– 50W wireless phone charging
– Heated and ventilated front seats
– Heated steering wheel
– Refrigerated storage compartment
– Powered front passenger “Queen Seat” with leg support
– 16-speaker audio system
BYD has also added several practical storage solutions, including under-seat rear drawers, a glasses holder, and additional cabin compartments.
Optional LiDAR-Based Driver Assistance
Except for the entry-level version, buyers can optionally equip the Atto 3 with BYD’s DiPilot 300 “God’s Eye B” advanced driver assistance system for an additional 12,000 yuan.
The package integrates LiDAR with 30 sensing units and enables features such as:
– Highway navigation assist
– Urban navigation assist
– Automated parking
As Chinese automakers continue pushing advanced driving technologies into more affordable models, systems like God’s Eye B could become a key selling point for mainstream EV buyers.
A Crucial Global Model For BYD
The Atto 3 remains one of BYD’s most important global electric vehicles and has played a major role in the company’s rapid international expansion. According to Chinese media reports, cumulative global sales surpassed 1.1 million units across 116 countries and regions by April 2026.
However, competition in China’s compact electric SUV segment has intensified significantly, with rivals such as Geely Galaxy E5 putting pressure on BYD’s sales momentum.
BYD is betting that faster charging, longer range, improved technology, and a more premium driving experience will help the third-generation Atto 3 maintain its strong position both in China and overseas markets.
