ChargePoint Reveals New Stats Demonstrating How EV Charging is Combating Climate Change

ChargePoint, the world’s largest electric vehicle network, has today released data from the ChargePoint network demonstrating the environmental benefit of ChargePoint stations since its inception in 2007.

EV adoption in the UK is growing rapidly and electric and hybrid cars sales reached record levels in the last month, accounting for almost 14% of all new car sales. It is clear the shift to electric mobility is here to stay and will only accelerate more quickly – which is great news for the environment.

In honour of Earth Day, ChargePoint wants to emphasise the importance of a green and sustainable future, by demonstrating the positive  environment their EV chargers are having, including saving 405 million litres of petrol and 387K metric tons of GHG emissions since the company began in 2007. As the world slowly starts to return to ‘normal’ we must consider our impact on the environment post-lockdown and the important role electric mobility plays in achieving net-zero emissions goals set by governments across the world.

ChargePoint has a driver plugging into their network every 2 seconds and below are some interesting stats from ChargePoint’s global network that reflect the positive impact EVs have on our planet.

  • Since its inception in 2007, ChargePoint drivers have driven over 2.6 billion electric miles and have avoided using 486 million litres of petrol.
  • ChargePoint stations have avoided roughly 387K metric tons of GHG emissions
    • This is equivalent to recycling 26 million bags of waste
    • Planting over 10 million tree seedlings and letting them grow for 10 years
  • In total, drivers have saved £166 million by driving electric vehicles
    • Saved £225 million in petrol costs
    • Saved £19 million in oil changes

Christopher Burghardt, Managing Director, Europe said: “The future’s looking brighter. However, as lockdown’s start to ease, it’s important to remember the importance of a green recovery across Europe. For governments to reach their overall emissions goals, EV chargers must be easily accessible. More and better quality charging infrastructure will accelerate mass adoption of electric vehicles by ensuring drivers have the confidence to adopt more environmentally friendly modes of transportation. As EV adoption rises, we will be able to continue to have a positive impact on the environment, and make a real change”.
