March 2016 Plug-in Sales

All major automakers are posting March sales numbers for plug-in electric vehicles.

NOTE: As always, this article is updated throughout the day as soon as more data is available.

2013-Nissan-LeafNissan LEAF
Sales of the all-electric Nissan LEAF totaled 1,246 units, down 31.4% compared to March of 2015 when Nissan sold 1,817 LEAF EV’s. In terms of year-to-date results in 2016, sales of the Nissan LEAF now stand at 2,931, which is down by 28.2% compared with 2015 when 4,085 were sold.Nissan introduced the 2016 all-electric LEAF with an available 30 kWh battery that provides an EPA-estimated range of 107 miles – a 27-percent increase over the previous 24 kWH battery.
2013-Chevrolet-VoltChevrolet Volt
2016 Chevrolet Volt sold 1,865 units last month, up 192 percent compared to March of 2015 when Chevy sold just 639 Volts. Overall for the year, 3,987 Chevrolet Volt plug-ins have been sold, which is up by 112.8% compared to 2015 when 1,874 units were sold.
2013-Prius-Plug-inToyota Prius Plug-in
Prius Plug-in Hybrid sold just 7 units last month. Previously in February, Toyota sold 6 Prius Plug-ins. Last year, sales of the Prius Plug-in Hybrid were at 4,191. The next generation Prius Prime PHV will come in the second half of 2016 as a 2017 model car.
2013-C-Max-EnergiFord C-Max Energi
Ford C-MAX Energi sold 610 units in March. Previously in February and January, Ford sold 490 and 350 plug-ins respectively. Last year, sales of the Ford C-Max Energi were 7,591.
2013-Fusion-EnergiFord Fusion Energi
Ford Fusion Energi finished last month with 1,238 deliveries, after selling 932 units in February and 581 units in January. Last year, sales of the Ford Fusion Energi were 9,750.
2014-Cadillac-ELRCadillac ELR
GM sold 104 Cadillac ELRs last month, up 13% compared to March of 2015 when Cadillac sold 92 ELRs. In terms of year-to-date, sales of the Cadillac ELR now stand at 262, which is down by18.8% compared with 2015 when 311 were sold.
2014-Porsche-Panamera-S-HybridPorsche Panamera S-E Hybrid
Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrids finished last month with 23 deliveries. Previously in February and January, Panamera S E-Hybrid sold 33 and 27 units respectively. Last year, sales of the Panamera S E-Hybrid were 407.
Porsche-Cayenne-S-E-Hybrid-300-150Porsche Cayenne S e-Hybrid
Porsche sold 244 Cayenne S E-Hybrid SUVs last month, after selling 172 units in February and 146 units in January. Last year, sales of the Cayenne S E-Hybrid were 1,103.
2013-Tesla-Model-STesla Model S – Does not report exactly monthly sales
Tesla Motors delivered 12,420 Model S vehicles, according to Q1 results.
Model-X-300x150Tesla Model X – Does not report exactly monthly sales
The Tesla Model X is priced as high as $144,000. Tesla delivered 2400 Model X vehicles in the Q1 of 2016.
BMW-i3BMW i3
BMW i3 sold 332 units last month, after selling 248 units in February and 182 units in January. Last year, 11,024 BMW i3 EVs have been sold.

BMW i8 sold 89 plug-in hybrid sports cars last month. BMW sold 54 units in February and 32 in January. Last year, 2,265 BMW i8 sports cars have been sold. The BMW i8 has an MSRP of $135,700
bmw-x5-xdrive40e-300-150BMW X5 xDrive40e
The BMW X5 xDrive40e sold 313 units, after selling 345 plug-in SUVs in February and 181 in January. With a total system output of 230 kW/313 hp generated by a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder gasoline engine and a synchronous electric motor, the BMW X5 xDrive40e achieves a combined fuel consumption of 69 – 71 mpg. The X5 xDrive is priced from $63,095 including $995 D&H.
B-Class-Electric-Drive-300x150Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive
Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive finished last month with 168 deliveries, after selling 37 units in February and 58 units in January. The B-Class Electric Drive starts from $41,450 and has an all-electric range of 87 miles. For an extra $600, one can purchase the extended range package which allows the driver go 104 miles. Overall for the year, 1,906 B-Class Electric Drive have been sold.

Mercedes-Benz S550 Plug-in Hybrid didn’t sold any unit last month. The S550 Plug-in Hybrid sold 19 copies in February and January.The Mercedes-Benz S550 Plug-in Hybrid offers a system output of 436 hp and 479 lb-ft torque, sprints from 0 to 62 mph in just 5.2 seconds and can drive up to 20 miles purely electrically.

Volkswagen e-Gold sold 86 units last month, after selling 198 units in February and 328 units in January. Last year, 4,232 VW e-Golf EVs have been sold. The all-electric 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf is on sale at participating dealerships in select states. The e-Golf was rated by the EPA at126 city, 105 highway, and 116 combined MPGe and given a range of up to 83 miles.

Audi A3 Sportback e-tron sold 332 units during the month, after selling 248 units in February and 327 units in January. The Audi A3 Sportback e-tron is priced at $37,900, and purchasing customers may qualify for applicable state and federal incentives and tax credits. The A3 Sportback e-tron features a 1.4 liter TFSI engine with a six-speed S tronic transmission which combined with a liquid-cooled, permanent magnet-driven electric motor produces 204. An 8.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack provides all-electric range of 22 miles.
Volvo-XC90-300-150Volvo XC90 T8 PHEV
Volvo XC90 PHEV sold 178 units during the month, after selling 176 units in February and 226 units in January. The MSRP of the Volvo XC90 T8 PHEV is $68,100 before incentives. Powered by Volvo’s 2.0 liter supercharged and turbocharged Drive-E engine and a rear axle electric motor, the XC90 T8 Twin Engine can achieve 394 horsepower and 0-60 MPH in just 5.7 seconds. The high-voltage battery pack is good for 17 miles of all-electric driving
Hyundai-Sonata-PHEVHyundai Sonata PHEV
Hyundai Sonata plug-in hybrid sold 275 units during the month. Previously in February and January, Sonata PHEV sold 200 and 175 units respectively. Hyundai Sonata PHEV is priced from $34,600 before incentives.

Kia Soul EV sold 79 units last month, after selling 60 units in February and 81 units in January. Last year, 1,015 Soul EVs have been sold. Offered in two trims, Base and + (Plus), the 2015 Kia Soul EV MSRP is $33,700 (not including federal tax rebate of $7,500) for the Base trim. Overall for the year, 529 Soul EVs have been sold.
2013-Smart-Fortwo-EDSmart Fortwo Electric Drive
Last month, smart fortwo ED sold 70 units last month, after selling 54 units in February and 48 units in January. In 2015, sales of the smart fortwo ED were 1,387 units.
2013-Fiat-500eFiat 500e
For January, Fiat 500e sold 255 units, after selling 210 units in February and 275 units in January. Last year, 6,194 Fiat 500e EVs have been sold.
Spark-EVChevrolet Spark EV
Spark EV sold 252 units, after selling 216 i February and 139 units in January. Last year, 2,629 Chevrolet Spark EVs have been sold.
2013-Focus-EVFord Focus Electric
Ford Focus Electric sold 110 units last month, after selling 81 in February. In January, Ford sold 66 Focus Electrics. Last year, sales of the Ford Focus Electric were 1,582.
2013-Mitsubishi-iMitsubishi i
Mitsubishi sold just one i-MiEV electric car in March, after selling 5 units in February and 2 units in January. Last year, 115 i-MiEV EVs have been sold. The 2016 Mitsubishi i-MiEV will arrive at Mitsubishi dealers across the United States in late March 2015. With a starting MSRP of only $22,995, the 2016 i-MiEV is the most affordably-priced electric vehicle available in America today, and after factoring in the Federal tax credit of $7,500, the net starting MSRP is reduced to $15,495.
