Sales of plug-in electric vehicles in the U.S. continued their strong pace in September, as the Nissan LEAF set a September record with 2,881 sales.
Chevrolet Volt finished last month with 1,394 deliveries – its lowest result since February.

Nissan LEAF set a September record with 2,881 sales, an increase of 47.5 percent from September 2013. This marks LEAF’s 19th consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases. In terms of year-to-date results in 2014, sales of the Nissan LEAF now stand at 21,822, an improvement of 35.7% compared with 2013 when 16,076 were sold.
Chevrolet Volt finished last month with 1,394 deliveries, a decrease of 21.1 percent compared to September 2013 when 1,766 were sold. With a new 2016 Volt to be introduced at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, sales of current Volt models seem likely to remain low for the next several months. In terms of year-to-date results in, sales of the Chevrolet Volt now stand at 14,540, which is down by 13.2% compared with 2013 number.
|Toyota Prius Plug-in|
Prius Plug-in Hybrid sold just 353 units during the month, which is down 52% compared to September 2013. In terms of year-to-date results in 2014, sales of the Prius Plug-in Hybrid now stand at 11,842, an improvement of 49% compared with 2013 when 7,974 were sold.
|Ford C-Max Energi|
Ford C-MAX Energi sold 677 units in September. Previously in August, Ford sold 1,050 plug-ins, passing the one thousand mark for the first time this year. Overall for the year, 6,486 Ford C-MAX Energi plug-ins have been sold.
|Ford Fusion Energi|
Ford Fusion Energi finished last month with just 640 deliveries, after selling 1,222 units in August. June was the best-ever month for Ford Fusion Energi with 1,939 sales, an increase of 44.5 percent over May, the previous best-ever month for the fusion Energi. Overall Ford has now sold 9,323 Fusion Energi plug-ins.
GM sold 196 Cadillac ELRs last month, which brings the total amount sold in the first 8 months to 744 units. The 2014 Cadillac ELR has a starting price of $75,995, including a $995 destination charge but excluding tax, title, license and dealer fees.
|Porsche Panamera S-E Hybrid|
Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrids finished last month with 82 deliveries. Previously in August, July, June, May and April, Panamera S E-Hybrid sold 68, 63, 111, 53 and 63 units respectively. In terms of year-to-date results in 2014, sales of the Panamera S E-Hybrid now stand at 694 units.
|Tesla Model S – Does not report exactly monthly sales|
Tesla Motors delivered 7,579 Model S vehicles and produced 8,763 of the cars, according to second-quarter results. The California-based electric carmaker lowered its forecast for revenue and deliveries for the third quarter to 7,800 vehicles from 9,500 because it had to shut down its factory in Fremont, Calif., to install equipment in July. Tesla said it should be able to ramp up production in the final three months of 2014 to reach its sales goal of 35,000
|Ford Focus Electric|
Deliveries of the Ford Focus Electric were 176 in September. Ford sold record 264 Focus Electric EVs in August and 198 units EVs in July, which was just a single unit more compared to June’s number of 197. Overall Ford has now sold 1,534 Focus Electric EVs.
BMW i3 achieved 1,022 sales last month, off by 3 units from August’s number. The total amount sold in the first 5 months on the market now stand at 3,104 units. BMW is now offering a new low cost DC fast charger for $6,548 at authorized BMW partners.

BMW i8 sold 58 units during the month. BMW sold nine i8 plug-in hybrid sports cars in its debut month in the US in August.. BMW delivered the first plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sport cars at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and auctioned One-of-a-kind BMW i8 Concours d’Elegance Edition for $825,000. The BMW i8 has an MSRP of $135,700
|Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive |
Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive finished last month with 65 deliveries, after selling 51 in and 41 units in July, its first month on the market. The B-Class Electric Drive starts from $41,450 and has an all-electric range of 87 miles. For an extra $600, one can purchase the extended range package which allows the driver go 104 miles.
|Toyota RAV4 EV|
Toyota RAV4 EV sold 125 units in September, after selling 228 units in August. In terms of year-to-date results in 2014, sales of the Toyota RAV4 EV now stand at 967 units.
|Honda Accord Plug-in |
The 2014 Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid logged 42 units last month. Previously in August, July, June, May, April, March, February and January, Accord Plug-in Hybrid sold 46, 41, 28, 46, 37, 18, 24 and 27 units respectively. In terms of year-to-date results in 2014, sales of the Accord Plug-In Hybrid now stand at 309.
|Smart Fortwo Electric Drive|
Last month, smart fortwo ED sold 182 units, after selling 208 Units in August, 298 units in July and 278 units in June. In terms of year-to-date results in 2014, sales of the smart fortwo ED now stand at 1,780 units.
For September, Fiat 500e sold 137 units. Previously in August Fiat 500e sold 166 units. Overall Fiat has now sold 1,438 500e EVs. The 2013 Fiat 500e is priced at $32,500, which includes a $700 destination charge. However, eligible California residents may be able to purchase the 2013 Fiat 500e for as low as $20,500, after federal credits.
|Chevrolet Spark EV|
GM sold just 51 Spark EVs in August. Previously in August and July, the Spark EV sold 80 and 128 units respectively. In May, the Chevrolet Spark EVs set an all-time record in 182 deliveries. In terms of year-to-date results in 2014, sales of the Chevrolet Spark EV now stand at 895.

Mitsubishi sold just 15 i-MiEV electric cars in September. Previously in August, Mitsubishi sold 20 i-MiEV electric cars. In terms of year-to-date results in 2014, sales of the i-MiEV now stand at 149 units. 2014 Mitsubishi i-MiEV starts at $22,995 including CHAdeMO DC quick charge port, representing a $6,130 reduction from the starting price of the 2012 model that preceded it.
|Honda Fit EV|
Honda sold 29 Fit EVs in September. Previously in August, Honda Fit EV sold 55 units. In terms of year-to-date results in 2014, sales of the Fit EV now stand at 347 units. Honda Fit EV production will be halted this fall when the automaker produces its 1,100th Fit EV. With the Fit EV being halted this fall, Honda will be left without a all-electric vehicle to compete in the growing segment.
