The Chevrolet Volt is set to have its best month ever, with more than 2,500 units having been purchased in August, an increase of about 10 percent over its previous best monthly record of 2,289 set in March 2012.
So far this year GM has sold more than 13,000 Volts, up 272% from the same period in 2011.
“We are seeing sales momentum continuing to build for the Volt, especially in key markets — California, Michigan, Illinois and Florida. We’re starting to see other markets grow as well. As with a lot of first generation technologies, it takes time to build customer awareness,” GM spokeswoman Michelle Malcho said.
Earlier this week GM said it will close the Volt factory in Detroit for four weeks to control inventory and retool the plant to build the new Chevrolet Impala.
The Chevrolet Volt has a base MSRP of $39,145 before a $7,500 tax credit and can travel for up to 38 miles on battery power alone.
