Amazon and Tata Motors to Deploy 3,000 Electric Trucks Across India

Amazon and Tata Motors are joining forces to accelerate the electrification of India’s freight transportation sector, announcing plans to deploy 3,000 electric trucks across Amazon’s logistics network. The initiative will represent the largest electric-truck deployment by an e-commerce company in India and marks a significant expansion of Amazon’s efforts to reduce emissions beyond last-mile deliveries.

The electric trucks will handle the transportation of customer shipments between fulfillment centers, across cities and along major national freight corridors. The partnership is expected to demonstrate how electric commercial vehicles can become a practical solution for large-scale logistics operations in one of the world’s fastest-growing e-commerce markets.

The first batch of Tata electric trucks was officially flagged off in Delhi by Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy, alongside senior representatives from Amazon and Tata Motors.

The deployment brings together Amazon’s extensive logistics network and freight requirements with Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle manufacturing, engineering and service capabilities. Tata Motors will supply the electric trucks, while Amazon’s carrier partners will own and operate the vehicles.

The planned deployment of 3,000 electric trucks represents an important step in Amazon’s strategy to electrify its transportation operations in India. While the company has already introduced thousands of electric vehicles for last-mile deliveries, this initiative targets the more challenging middle-mile and regional freight segments.

Amazon currently has more than 15,000 electric vehicles operating across over 500 Indian cities. The new collaboration with Tata Motors aims to extend that transition to heavier commercial vehicles, which play a critical role in moving goods between logistics facilities and distribution centers.

According to Amazon, transportation electrification is a key part of its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 under The Climate Pledge.

The initial deployment will focus on intracity operations before expanding to major freight corridors. Amazon also plans to support its carrier partners and drivers through investments in charging infrastructure and solutions designed to make commercial EV adoption easier.

The first phase of the electric truck deployment will begin in Delhi during India’s festive season, when e-commerce and retail logistics networks typically experience some of their highest annual freight volumes.

Amazon will initially introduce light- and medium-duty electric trucks from Tata Motors across its middle-mile transportation network.

The next stage will expand operations to major national highways, including plans to electrify the 2,800-kilometer Delhi–Bengaluru–Chennai freight corridor along NH48.

The route spans seven states and connects six of India’s largest e-commerce regions, making it an important test case for electric trucks operating across longer distances.

Supporting infrastructure will be essential to making the expansion possible. Dedicated charging facilities, including charging hubs being developed in partnership with infrastructure provider Yahhvi, will help support the trucks along the network.

Amazon’s existing electrification efforts in India already include 10 charging yards developed with Yahhvi, providing a foundation for the larger electric trucking initiative.
