The iconic smart two-seater is making a comeback with the all-electric smart #2, a compact city car designed to bring the original fortwo concept into a new era of electric mobility. Featuring a dedicated EV platform, a rear-mounted electric motor and a targeted WLTP range of up to 180 miles, the new model combines familiar urban-friendly dimensions with modern technology.
Unveiled 30 years after the original smart two-seater concept debuted in Paris, the smart #2 aims to meet the needs of drivers looking for an electric car that is easy to maneuver, park and live with in crowded cities.
The new model is expected to arrive in the UK with a starting price below £20,000, although full pricing details are still to be announced.
smart #2 Brings Back the Spirit of the fortwo
Measuring just 2,746 mm long, the smart #2 retains the defining characteristics of the original smart fortwo. Its wheels-at-the-corners design maximizes interior space while keeping the overall footprint small enough for tight urban streets and restricted parking spaces.
The car also features a curb-to-curb turning circle of just 6.95 metres, making maneuverability one of its main selling points. Despite its compact dimensions, smart says the new model combines a practical cabin with modern comfort and connectivity features.
Familiar styling elements also return, including a two-tone exterior design and the distinctive Split Tailgate. These features help preserve the identity of the original city car while introducing a more contemporary appearance.
Wolfgang Ufer, CEO of smart Europe GmbH, describes the smart #2 as a modern reinterpretation of the brand’s iconic two-seater, combining its compact proportions with the latest technology to make urban mobility more practical and distinctive.
smart #2 Electric Motor, Battery and Range
The smart #2 is built on the newly developed Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), a dedicated platform designed specifically for the electric two-seater.
Power comes from a rear-mounted electric motor producing 60 kW, equivalent to approximately 80 horsepower, and 130 Nm of torque. The motor drives the rear wheels, while wider rear tires are designed to improve stability and driving dynamics.
A 35.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery provides a targeted WLTP driving range of up to 180 miles. This figure is a target rather than a final certified range, meaning the official figure could differ when the car reaches production.
Charging performance is another important part of the package. The smart #2 supports DC fast charging at up to 65 kW, with a claimed 10% to 80% charging time of around 20 minutes. AC charging is also available, with support for up to 11 kW depending on the version.
The car will additionally offer vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, allowing compatible external electrical devices to draw power from its battery.
For a vehicle primarily intended for urban driving, the combination of a compact battery, modest motor output and relatively quick DC charging could make the smart #2 a practical option for daily commuting and shorter journeys.
New Suspension and Safety Technology
Although the smart #2 is designed primarily for city use, the company says its engineering has also focused on stability and comfort at higher speeds.
A five-link rear suspension, described by smart as a first for its class, works with the floor-mounted battery’s low centre of gravity to improve handling and ride composure. The chassis and steering have been developed to balance maneuverability on narrow streets with confidence on open roads.
Safety remains central to the new model’s design. The Tridion Cell Evo represents the next evolution of smart’s signature safety cell, which has helped define the brand’s vehicles since the original fortwo.
The smart #2 will also offer a comprehensive set of driver assistance systems. Announced features include smart Pilot Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, and Highway Assist. Blind Spot Detection, Rear Collision Mitigation and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are also included in the equipment package described for the UK range.
Final equipment availability may vary by trim and market.
smart #2 Interior, Screens and Connectivity
Inside, the smart #2 combines a compact cabin with a clean, technology-focused layout. The interior features a continuous bench-style seating arrangement, an S-shaped cockpit and straightforward controls designed around everyday usability.
A 10.1-inch central touchscreen sits alongside an 8.8-inch driver display. The system supports 4G connectivity, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, while an eight-year Connectivity Package is intended to keep the car connected to smart’s online vehicle services.
Another distinctive feature is the smart Pillar, an integrated dashboard mounting point designed to accommodate small accessories and gadgets within easy reach.
The interior approach reflects the car’s urban focus: maximizing the usefulness of limited space while offering the digital features increasingly expected in modern electric vehicles.
smart #2 Pure, Premium and Couture Edition
For the UK market, smart has announced two main trim levels, Pure and Premium, alongside a limited-production Couture Edition.
The smart #2 Pure serves as the entry point to the range. It includes LED headlights and taillights, automatic high beam, V2L functionality and a suite of driver assistance technologies. The standard equipment is intended to cover the essentials for everyday city driving without sacrificing key safety and convenience features.
The smart #2 Premium adds further comfort and convenience equipment, including a heated driver’s seat, a glass roof, heated faux-leather seats and a seven-speaker Sennheiser sound system. The specification also includes 11 kW AC charging, along with additional exterior and interior colour combinations.
The limited smart #2 Couture Edition will be restricted to 999 units across Europe. It features Atelier White Matte paint paired with a Platinum Gold roof and 16-inch Lyra wheels with gold detailing.
Based on the Premium specification, the special edition adds equipment such as ambient lighting, heated seats and steering wheel, wireless charging and navigation. A numbered interior badge further distinguishes the limited-run model.
smart #2 Price and UK Availability
The smart #2 is expected to be available in the UK for less than £20,000, positioning it as a relatively accessible entry into the electric car market. Final pricing, detailed specifications and full availability information are expected to be announced later in 2026.
If the anticipated starting price is maintained, the smart #2 could appeal to drivers who want an electric vehicle primarily for commuting, shopping and navigating congested city centres. Its small footprint could also make it attractive to households looking for a second car rather than a vehicle intended for regular long-distance travel.
However, its real-world appeal will depend on the final price, certified driving range, standard equipment and the availability of suitable charging options.
