Opel is showcasing its vision of the next generation of electric estate cars with the new Opel Sports Tourer eXperimental Concept, also known as the Opel STX Concept, at the 2026 Paris Motor Show.
The futuristic show car will highlight the German automaker’s evolving design philosophy, combining aerodynamic efficiency, advanced technology and everyday practicality in an all-electric package.
The Opel STX Concept will be presented at the Mondial de l’Auto in Paris from October 12 to 18, alongside the new Opel GSE 27FE Formula E race car, which will make its world premiere, and the Corsa GSE hot hatch, which will make its exhibition debut.
While the STX Concept is not a production model, it offers an early look at Opel’s plans for future vehicles, including the design elements and technologies that could appear in upcoming models.
Opel STX Concept Reimagines the Electric Estate
The STX Concept represents Opel’s latest interpretation of the traditional estate car, a body style the brand has helped establish in Europe for decades. From the Olympia Rekord Caravan introduced in 1953 to the modern Astra Sports Tourer, Opel has built a long history around combining practical space with distinctive styling.
The new concept aims to take that formula into the electric era. Its design focuses on a more expressive appearance, improved aerodynamic performance and intelligent technologies intended to enhance both efficiency and driving enjoyment.
According to Opel CEO Florian Huettl, the concept demonstrates how future estate cars can combine functionality with emotional design. It also signals the next stage of the company’s design language, which places greater emphasis on sculptural surfaces, precision and technological details.
The result is an electric estate concept that prioritizes practicality without adopting the understated styling often associated with efficiency-focused electric vehicles.
A Bolder Opel Vizor Defines the Front End
One of the most distinctive features of the Opel STX Concept is the latest evolution of the brand’s signature Vizor front design.
Unlike the ultra-slim front treatments found on many modern electric cars, the STX Concept features a taller, more prominent Vizor that gives the vehicle a stronger visual presence. The illuminated Opel Blitz emblem sits at the center of the brand’s familiar Opel Compass design, while the sharply defined bonnet crease reinforces its sporty appearance.
The lighting signature introduces vertical, angled elements that frame the Vizor and gradually fade toward the center. This creates a more technical and distinctive look while maintaining the recognizable Opel design identity.
At the rear, the concept combines a steeply descending profile with a spacious cargo area. The illuminated Opel wordmark sits between slim horizontal taillights, while illuminated Compass elements provide a more precise interpretation of the brand’s signature lighting design.
Opel has also incorporated several unusual exterior details. Glass light strips extend from the rear window line into the roof around the distinctive C-pillars, creating an eye-catching visual effect. Illuminated STX lettering and precisely shaped camera housings, which replace conventional side mirrors, further emphasize the concept’s futuristic character.
Together, these elements offer a preview of the design direction Opel intends to explore in future production vehicles.
Aerodynamic Design Focuses on Range and High-Speed Stability
Efficiency is central to the Opel STX Concept, particularly given its positioning as an electric estate designed for long-distance travel.
The concept features a low, elongated silhouette with short overhangs and pronounced wheel arches. Its sculpted bodywork is intended to improve airflow while giving the vehicle a planted, athletic stance.
The silver-and-blue exterior also highlights the concept’s technical appearance, while its wide proportions suggest a focus on stability and performance.
Opel has developed several aerodynamic solutions to help reduce drag and improve efficiency. The concept rides on aerodynamically optimized three-section alloy wheels fitted with 285/35 R22 Goodyear tires.
More significantly, the STX Concept features an active aerodynamic system that adjusts to driving conditions. Movable elements at the rear help manage airflow, with blue-colored diffusers extending beneath the vehicle at appropriate speeds. Additional vertical elements behind the wheels move outward toward the rear to further optimize the airflow around the body.
These solutions are intended to improve aerodynamic efficiency, extend driving range and enhance directional stability, particularly at higher speeds.
However, Opel has not announced an official drag coefficient, battery capacity or estimated driving range for the concept.
Electric All-Wheel Drive and a Top Speed Above 200 km/h
Beyond its styling, the Opel STX Concept offers a glimpse of the performance potential of the brand’s future electric vehicles.
Opel says the concept combines an innovative electric architecture with all-wheel drive and a top speed exceeding 200 km/h (124 mph). These specifications suggest that the vehicle is intended to demonstrate how an electric estate can balance everyday usability with high-speed performance.
All-wheel drive could also provide additional traction and stability, complementing the concept’s aerodynamic design.
Nevertheless, the company has not disclosed details about the electric motors, total power output, battery size or charging performance. As a result, it remains unclear how the STX Concept’s powertrain would compare with existing high-performance electric cars.
The concept’s stated top speed and all-wheel-drive configuration should therefore be viewed as indicators of Opel’s design and engineering ambitions rather than confirmed specifications for a future production model.
Interior to Explore Opel’s ‘Painting with Light’ Philosophy
Opel has also indicated that the STX Concept will influence the future development of its interior design.
The cabin is expected to build on the company’s Painting with Light approach, previously explored in the 2023 Opel Experimental concept and the 2025 Opel Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo.
This design philosophy uses immersive lighting elements to create a more distinctive cabin atmosphere. Lightweight seats and carefully integrated technology are also part of the direction Opel intends to pursue.
The objective is to create an interior that feels modern and technologically advanced without sacrificing comfort or practicality.
Although Opel has not yet provided a complete production-oriented interior specification for the STX Concept, its approach suggests that lighting, material efficiency and minimalist technology integration will play an increasingly important role in future models.
What the Opel STX Concept Means for Future Electric Cars
The Opel STX Concept is more than a styling exercise. It demonstrates how the company intends to evolve its established estate-car formula as the industry transitions toward electric mobility.
Its combination of a more prominent Vizor front end, distinctive lighting, active aerodynamics and an all-wheel-drive electric architecture points toward a future in which efficiency and emotional design are treated as complementary priorities.
The concept also reinforces Opel’s intention to preserve the practical advantages that have made estate cars popular in Europe. A spacious cargo area, a streamlined body and a focus on long-distance driving remain central to the vehicle’s identity.
For buyers who want the versatility of an estate without moving to an SUV, an electric model inspired by the STX Concept could eventually offer an interesting alternative. However, Opel has not confirmed a production version, launch date, pricing or technical specifications for a potential road-going model.
The Paris Motor Show will therefore provide the first opportunity to see how Opel envisions the next chapter of its estate-car heritage.
If the design and technology previewed by the STX Concept reach future production vehicles, Opel could bring a more expressive and performance-focused approach to the electric estate segment while maintaining the practicality that has defined its Sports Tourer models for generations.
