FIAT has unveiled the Multiplay concept, a versatile new vehicle that combines the practicality of an MPV, the rugged character of an SUV and the cargo-carrying capabilities of a pickup.
Revealed at Stellantis’ “Night Before” event ahead of the 2026 Paris Motor Show, the 4.45-meter-long concept explores a new approach to family mobility, with an interior that can adapt to changing everyday needs.
At the center of the project is FIAT’s innovative C-pillar “Metamorfosi” architecture, which allows the vehicle to transform from a six-plus-one-seat family car into a four-seat pickup with an open cargo bed. The concept is designed to accommodate everything from school runs and family trips to cycling adventures and outdoor activities.
However, FIAT emphasizes that the Multiplay is a research and development project rather than a preview of a specific production model. Its purpose is to explore practical solutions that could influence the brand’s future vehicles.
FIAT Multiplay Concept: From Family MPV to Pickup
The Multiplay’s defining feature is its sliding rear module, which changes the vehicle’s layout depending on the task at hand. In its family configuration, the concept accommodates six occupants plus a flexible additional seating element. When more cargo space is required, the rear section can be reconfigured to create a four-seat pickup with an open bed.
This transformation could make the Multiplay particularly useful for families who regularly switch between carrying passengers and transporting bulky equipment. Bicycles, sports gear and outdoor accessories can be accommodated without requiring a separate vehicle.
FIAT has also designed the rear spoiler to serve more than one purpose. It rotates to become an integrated bicycle rack capable of carrying up to two bikes in pickup mode. By combining aerodynamic and practical functions in a single component, the concept reduces the need for additional accessories.
The result is a vehicle designed around flexibility rather than a single body style, challenging the traditional distinction between family cars and utility vehicles.
A Modern Take on the Original FIAT Multipla
The Multiplay concept draws inspiration from two important models in FIAT’s history: the original 1956 FIAT 600 Multipla and the second-generation Multipla introduced in 1998.
The 600 Multipla demonstrated how a compact vehicle measuring approximately 3.5 meters could accommodate six people. More than four decades later, the 1998 Multipla continued that philosophy with six seats arranged across two rows in a vehicle less than four meters long.
The new concept carries this space-efficient approach into a different era. Rather than concentrating exclusively on maximizing passenger capacity, the Multiplay explores how one vehicle can adapt to multiple roles throughout the day.
Its combination of configurable seating, a transformable cargo area and integrated outdoor equipment reflects FIAT’s continued interest in making compact vehicles more practical without unnecessarily increasing their exterior dimensions.
A Flexible Interior With a Dedicated Space for Pets
Inside, the Multiplay introduces a modular feature called the “Petsenger seat.” This flexible element forms part of the six-plus-one seating arrangement and can serve several purposes depending on the occupants’ needs.
It can function as a mounting point for a child seat, a dedicated space for a pet, a small table or a storage compartment. The idea is to make the cabin adaptable rather than dedicating every interior component to a single function.
FIAT has also incorporated pet-friendly details into the design. Part of the seat cushion can be detached and used as a leash, while a folding bowl is stored inside a door compartment. Additional pockets, elastic straps and multifunctional storage solutions help keep everyday essentials organized.
The concept also addresses a common limitation of compact family vehicles: the difficulty of making the third row genuinely useful. Its rear compartment is designed to accommodate up to two children and, when necessary, an adult, creating a dedicated space for younger passengers while keeping them within reach of the front occupants.
Another distinctive feature is the front passenger seat’s transformation into the “Sunseat.” When the vehicle is parked, the seat can face rearward and use the dashboard as a backrest, creating a lounge-style chaise longue beneath the panoramic roof. It offers a place to relax, read or enjoy the surroundings during outdoor breaks.
Large windows, generous side glazing and the panoramic roof further enhance the feeling of openness inside the cabin.
Colorful Design Inspired by the Italian Summer
FIAT has given the Multiplay a distinctive color scheme inspired by watermelon, reflecting the brand’s emphasis on cheerful Italian design and shared experiences.
The exterior features bright green bodywork reminiscent of watermelon rind, while red and pink shades appear throughout the cabin. A soft pink floor and a pixelated color gradient extending from the Petsenger seat toward the children’s area add turquoise accents to the interior.
Beyond its playful appearance, the concept explores materials intended to simplify manufacturing and everyday maintenance. Many of the soft interior components use monomaterial textiles produced through a seamless 3D-knitting process. This approach is intended to reduce waste while creating soft, adaptable surfaces.
The children’s and pets’ areas feature waterproof finishes designed to cope with the demands of family use.
A horizontal dashboard strip takes inspiration from the Mediterranean horizon, where the sea and sky meet. This design element also continues FIAT’s longstanding philosophy of connecting exterior body colors with the interior environment.
Digital Technology Blends Into the Dashboard
The Multiplay concept also explores a more discreet approach to in-car technology. Its display is integrated into the dashboard and can remain hidden when the vehicle is switched off, leaving the cabin visually uncluttered.
Rather than allowing screens to dominate the interior, the design incorporates digital functions into the broader cabin architecture. This supports the concept’s emphasis on passenger comfort, flexible living space and practical everyday use.
The approach suggests an interior in which technology remains available when needed without becoming the primary focus of the driving and passenger experience.
Could the FIAT Multiplay Influence Future Family EVs?
Although FIAT has not confirmed the Multiplay as a future production vehicle, its ideas address several challenges facing modern family cars. Buyers often need generous passenger space, flexible cargo capacity and practical features for hobbies and outdoor activities, but these requirements can be difficult to combine in a compact vehicle.
The Multiplay explores whether a configurable architecture can reduce those compromises. Its sliding rear module, multifunctional seating, integrated bicycle rack and adaptable interior demonstrate how a single vehicle could cover tasks traditionally associated with different vehicle categories.
FIAT has not announced a production timeline, powertrain specifications, battery capacity, electric driving range or pricing for the concept. It should therefore be viewed as a design and engineering study rather than a confirmed future electric car.
Still, the Multiplay offers an interesting glimpse into how FIAT could approach vehicle versatility in the coming years. By revisiting the space-efficient philosophy of the original Multipla and combining it with a transformable body layout, the concept proposes a different way to think about family transportation.
Whether these ideas eventually reach production remains uncertain, but the Multiplay demonstrates FIAT’s interest in vehicles that can adapt to changing needs instead of forcing families to choose between passenger comfort and cargo flexibility.
