Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI Pre-Orders Now Open at €39,995

Volkswagen is bringing the iconic GTI formula into the electric era with the new ID. Polo GTI, the brand’s first all-electric model to wear the legendary three-letter badge.

Pre-sales for the new electric hot hatch have now begun, with prices starting at €39,995. With 166 kW (226 PS), 290 Nm of instant torque and a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 6.8 seconds, the ID. Polo GTI is designed to deliver the quick responses and sharp handling expected from a GTI while offering the practicality of an electric car.

The new model also marks an important moment in Volkswagen’s performance-car history. The ID. Polo GTI takes inspiration from the original Golf GTI launched in 1976, translating its compact dimensions, front-wheel-drive layout and sporty character into an EV.

226 HP and Front-Wheel Drive

The Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI produces 226 PS (166 kW) and sends its power to the front wheels. Its electric motor delivers a maximum 290 Nm of torque immediately, helping the compact EV accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds.

Top speed is electronically limited to 190 km/h.

Rather than relying solely on electronic traction control, Volkswagen has equipped the ID. Polo GTI with an electronically controlled front-axle differential lock. The system can distribute power between the front wheels to improve traction and stability, particularly when accelerating out of corners.

The suspension and steering systems have also been specifically tuned for the GTI. Standard equipment includes adaptive DCC sports suspension and progressive steering, giving the ID. Polo GTI a more focused driving character than the regular ID. Polo.

A New GTI Driving Mode

Volkswagen has created a dedicated GTI driving profile for the ID. Polo GTI. Activated using a button on the sports steering wheel, the mode adjusts the electric powertrain, steering and suspension for a more aggressive setup.

The GTI experience also gets a digital soundtrack. A specially developed GTI sound plays when the performance mode is activated, while the cockpit switches to a unique GTI-themed display and color scheme.

It is a modern interpretation of a familiar GTI tradition: making the car feel different the moment the driver selects its sportiest setting.

Classic GTI Design Meets Electric Styling

Despite its electric powertrain, the ID. Polo GTI is immediately recognizable as a member of the GTI family.

A red accent stripe across the front, honeycomb detailing and standard 19-inch alloy wheels reference traditional GTI design cues. The car also features IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, illuminated Volkswagen logos, a split roof-edge spoiler and GTI badging across the exterior.

Inside, Volkswagen continues the theme with red contrast stitching, a red 12 o’clock marking on the sports steering wheel and standard sports seats.

The familiar GTI checkered seat pattern has also been reinterpreted for the electric model, connecting the ID. Polo GTI to decades of Volkswagen performance cars.

Up to 431 km of Electric Range

The ID. Polo GTI is powered by a 52 kWh usable battery and has a WLTP range of up to 431 km (268 miles).

For longer journeys, Volkswagen’s navigation system includes an e-route planner that can automatically calculate charging stops.

DC fast charging is supported at up to 105 kW. Volkswagen says the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in around 24 minutes, helped by a consistent charging curve.

While the ID. Polo GTI is primarily focused on driving performance, its range and charging capability are intended to make it practical as a daily electric car as well.

More Practical Than the Gasoline Polo GTI

The electric platform also brings an unexpected advantage: additional interior and cargo space.

The ID. Polo GTI offers 441 liters of luggage capacity, compared with 351 liters in the combustion-engine Polo GTI. Folding the rear seats increases available space to as much as 1,240 liters.

A detachable tow bar is available as an option. With a 75 kg nose weight rating, it can accommodate a bike carrier capable of carrying two e-bikes.

That combination of performance, range and practicality could make the electric GTI more than simply a weekend performance car.

Retro GTI Details in a Digital Cabin

The ID. Polo GTI features a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit and a centrally positioned 12.9-inch infotainment screen.

Volkswagen is also adding a clever dose of nostalgia. An optional retro display recreates the look of instruments from the late Golf I, bringing a piece of GTI history into the modern digital cabin.

The retro theme extends to the entertainment system, which can display the currently playing track as a cassette, referencing the 1980s era of GTI culture.

Optional Equipment Includes Harman Kardon Audio and Massage Seats

Volkswagen is offering a range of optional equipment for buyers who want to add comfort and technology to the ID. Polo GTI.

Options include a panoramic glass sunroof, electrically adjustable 12-way front seats with pneumatic massage functions and a 425-watt Harman Kardon sound system.

Drivers looking for additional performance can also select specially developed 19-inch premium sports tires.

Volkswagen’s latest-generation Connected Travel Assist is available as an option as well. Within its operating limits, the system can assist with steering and acceleration/braking. It can also recognize red traffic lights and bring the vehicle to a stop.

The Electric GTI Has Arrived

The Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI represents a significant shift for one of the automotive industry’s most recognizable performance badges. Instead of abandoning the GTI formula, Volkswagen is adapting it to electric propulsion.

With 226 PS, 290 Nm, front-wheel drive, a 6.8-second 0-100 km/h time and up to 431 km of range, the ID. Polo GTI combines traditional hot-hatch ingredients with the instant response of an electric motor.

Starting at €39,995, it also positions itself as a relatively accessible entry point into Volkswagen’s new generation of electric performance cars.

The bigger question is whether an electric GTI can deliver the same emotional appeal as the legendary gasoline models that came before it. Volkswagen clearly believes the GTI formula can survive the transition to electric power—and the ID. Polo GTI is its first serious attempt to prove it.
