Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI Debuts as an Electric Hot Hatch for a New Era

Nearly 50 years after the original GTI changed the performance car landscape, Volkswagen is ushering its iconic badge into the electric age. The all-new Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI marks the brand’s first fully electric GTI, combining zero-emissions driving with the sharp dynamics that made the name legendary.

Unveiled today at the Nürburgring 24-hour race, this compact EV blends everyday usability with genuine hot hatch performance—staying true to its roots while embracing the future.

Performance: Electric Power Meets GTI DNA

At the heart of the ID. Polo GTI is a front-mounted electric motor producing 166 kW (226 PS) and 290 Nm of torque. Power is delivered instantly to the front wheels, maintaining the classic GTI front-wheel-drive setup.

Acceleration is brisk, with 0–100 km/h achieved in 6.8 seconds. An electronically controlled front differential lock ensures optimal traction and precise handling, especially under spirited driving.

The standard GTI driving mode sharpens throttle response, steering, and suspension settings at the press of a button. This unified tuning delivers the familiar “GTI feel” despite the transition to electric power.

Battery, Range, and Charging

The ID. Polo GTI is equipped with a 52 kWh (net) nickel-manganese-cobalt battery, offering a WLTP range of up to 424 km (263 miles). This places it among the more practical electric hot hatches in its class.

Fast charging is supported at up to 105 kW DC, enabling a 10–80% charge in approximately 24 minutes. A stable charging curve helps maintain consistent charging speeds, improving real-world usability during longer trips.

Design: Instantly Recognizable GTI

Volkswagen has preserved key GTI styling cues while modernizing the overall design. The front fascia features the signature red stripe stretching across the width, paired with an illuminated VW badge and IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights.

A honeycomb-pattern air intake and red vertical accents reinforce the sporty look. The car rides on standard 19-inch alloy wheels, giving it a planted, aggressive stance.

From the side, the silhouette remains clean and unmistakably Volkswagen, highlighted by the signature C-pillar design. At the rear, a split roof spoiler, illuminated red light elements, and a bold diffuser complete the performance-focused aesthetic.

Interior: Sporty, Digital, and Nostalgic

Inside, the ID. Polo GTI blends modern technology with heritage-inspired details. Red accents dominate the cabin, from contrast stitching to the iconic 12 o’clock steering wheel marker.

The sport seats feature a reinterpretation of the classic GTI tartan pattern, while illuminated GTI logos add a premium touch.

A 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit and a large 12.9-inch infotainment display form the digital centerpiece. A standout feature is the optional retro display mode, which transforms the interface to mimic the original Golf GTI’s classic gauges—complete with cassette-style graphics.

Practicality: More Space, More Versatility

Despite its compact footprint, the ID. Polo GTI offers improved interior space thanks to its dedicated EV platform. Compared to its combustion-engine predecessor, passengers benefit from increased legroom, headroom, and cabin width.

Cargo capacity has also grown significantly, from 351 liters to 441 liters, expanding to 1,240 liters with the rear seats folded. A towing capacity of up to 1.2 tonnes further enhances versatility—rare for a compact EV.

Technology and Driver Assistance

Built on the latest MEB+ platform, the ID. Polo GTI comes equipped with advanced driver assistance systems. Optional Connected Travel Assist enables semi-autonomous driving with lane and speed control.

A notable addition is traffic light recognition, allowing the vehicle to detect red lights and brake automatically within system limits. One-pedal driving is also supported, enabling smoother and more efficient urban driving.

Optional Features and Upgrades

Buyers can enhance the ID. Polo GTI with several premium options, including a Harman Kardon sound system delivering 425 watts through 10 speakers.

Other highlights include a panoramic sunroof and 12-way electrically adjustable seats with a pneumatic massage function—features rarely seen in this segment. Performance enthusiasts can also opt for specially developed Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires.

Pricing and Availability

Pre-sales for the ID. Polo GTI are set to begin in Germany in autumn 2026, with pricing expected to start just under €39,000. This positions it competitively within the growing electric hot hatch segment.

A True GTI for the Electric Age

The Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI successfully carries forward the spirit of the original GTI while adapting it for an electric future. With strong performance, practical range, and unmistakable styling, it stands out as a compelling option for drivers seeking a sporty yet usable EV.

As the hot hatch segment transitions to electrification, the ID. Polo GTI proves that the GTI badge still has plenty of relevance—and excitement—left in it.
