The all-new Volkswagen ID. Polo has won the Budget category at the 2026 German Car of the Year (GCOTY) awards, beating seven competitors and strengthening Volkswagen’s push to bring affordable electric mobility to the heart of the small-car segment.
The electric hatchback finished ahead of the Renault Twingo and Renault Clio, with the international GCOTY jury giving the ID. Polo top marks in four of the five main evaluation categories.
The award adds an important accolade to Volkswagen’s latest electric model, which combines the familiar Polo name with an all-electric powertrain, practical dimensions and technology previously associated with larger, more expensive vehicles.
The ID. Polo performed particularly strongly in Design and Driving Pleasure, where it achieved 85.8 percent of the maximum possible score.
It also recorded an 84.2 percent score for Safety and Environment, while Significance and Innovation earned 83.8 percent. The model scored 82.0 percent in Comfort and Practicality, highlighting its focus on everyday usability.
According to Jens Meiners, co-founder of GCOTY, the ID. Polo outperformed the runner-up in four of the five evaluation criteria, resulting in a clear victory in its class.
The electric Volkswagen also performed well in the broader design awards. Among the 47 GCOTY jurors, the ID. Polo finished second overall in the Special Award Best Interior Design category and third for Best Exterior Design.
The GCOTY win is particularly significant because the ID. Polo carries one of Volkswagen’s most recognizable nameplates into the electric era.
More than 20 million Volkswagen Polo models have been sold worldwide, making it one of the company’s most successful vehicles. The new ID. Polo retains the name while adopting a completely electric drivetrain and a technology-focused interior.
Developed in Wolfsburg, the compact EV features a clean, modern design, front-wheel drive and an emphasis on interior space and efficiency. Volkswagen is also positioning the car as a more accessible entry point into its growing electric vehicle lineup.
The ID. Polo incorporates technologies typically found in higher vehicle segments, while maintaining the compact footprint that has made the Polo popular with urban and everyday drivers.
Volkswagen ID. Polo price starts at €24,995
One of the model’s biggest selling points is its starting price. The Volkswagen ID. Polo starts at €24,995, putting the new electric hatchback into a much more accessible price range than many larger EVs.
That positioning is central to Volkswagen’s strategy of expanding electric vehicle adoption beyond premium and larger segments.
With the GCOTY Budget category win, the ID. Polo has now received recognition for combining affordability with design, driving dynamics, safety, practicality and technology.
The award also highlights the growing competition in Europe’s small electric car market, where models such as the Renault Twingo and other affordable EVs are targeting drivers looking for lower-cost alternatives to conventional combustion-powered cars.
For Volkswagen, the ID. Polo represents more than another electric model. It is the electric continuation of a long-running best-seller and an important step toward making EVs more accessible to a wider range of buyers.
