Volkswagen is bringing the legendary GTI formula into the electric era with the new ID.3 GTI, revealed ahead of its planned market launch in 2027. Marking 50 years of GTI history, the electric hot hatch becomes the most powerful production GTI ever built by Volkswagen.
With 240 kW (326 PS), 545 Nm of torque, rear-wheel drive and a claimed range of up to 601 km, the ID.3 GTI combines the performance expected from a GTI with the practicality of a compact electric car.
326 PS Makes the ID.3 GTI the Most Powerful Production GTI
The headline figure is the electric motor mounted on the rear axle. It produces 240 kW (326 PS) and an impressive 545 Nm of torque, giving the ID.3 GTI strong acceleration across a wide range of driving conditions.
Volkswagen says the electric GTI can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, while Launch Control is standard equipment. Top speed is electronically limited to 200 km/h.
Unlike a conventional GTI, the ID.3 GTI can deliver its maximum torque immediately. Volkswagen has paired that instant response with a low center of gravity, progressive steering and an adaptive DCC sports chassis designed to give the car a more dynamic character.
The result is intended to make the ID.3 GTI feel like a genuine performance model rather than simply a more powerful version of the standard ID.3.
79-kWh Battery and Up to 601 km of Range
Performance has not come at the expense of efficiency. The ID.3 GTI uses a 79-kWh net battery and offers a claimed range of up to 601 km.
DC fast charging is supported at up to 183 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 29 minutes under suitable conditions.
That combination of performance and range puts the ID.3 GTI in an unusual position among electric performance hatchbacks. It is designed to be fast on a twisty road while remaining suitable for everyday commuting and longer trips.
Classic GTI Design Goes Electric
Volkswagen has retained many of the visual cues that have defined the GTI brand for decades while adapting them to the electric ID.3 platform.
At the front, the new IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights are connected by a transparent light strip incorporating an illuminated Volkswagen logo. Above it sits one of the most recognizable GTI design elements: the red stripe, inspired by the original 1976 Golf GTI.
The bumper also features vertically integrated LED elements and a high-gloss black honeycomb grille. Red details on the outer edges and a motorsport-inspired front splitter further distinguish the GTI from the regular ID.3.
The side profile is dominated by standard 20-inch Wörthersee alloy wheels, a name that pays tribute to the famous GTI gathering in Austria. High-gloss black mirror caps and side skirts add further GTI styling.
Interestingly, Volkswagen has moved away from the black roof treatment used on the previous ID.3 GTX. The roof, spoiler and rear hatch are now finished in the body color, giving the car a longer and more streamlined appearance.
Five exterior colors will be offered, including Tornado Red, Moonstone Grey, Scale Silver, Grenadilla Black and Glacier White. Tornado Red is particularly significant to the GTI brand, having previously been associated with the first-generation Golf GTI.
GTI Interior Brings Back Tartan and Red Details
Inside, the ID.3 GTI follows the traditional GTI formula with a predominantly black-and-red theme.
A thin red stripe runs across the dashboard, while the new multifunction sports steering wheel features a red 12-o’clock marking. The premium sport seats use a Superclark pattern, providing a modern interpretation of the tartan-style upholstery found in the original Golf GTI.
The steering wheel also incorporates an illuminated GTI button. Pressing it activates the dedicated GTI driving profile, which joins Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual modes.
GTI mode adjusts the electric motor, progressive steering and adaptive DCC chassis for maximum sportiness. It also enables Launch Control.
Volkswagen has added several theatrical touches to the experience. The cabin lighting switches to red, the ID. Light flashes red and the Digital Cockpit changes to a dedicated GTI display. A simulated combustion-engine sound is also played in the background, providing an audible connection to the traditional GTI experience.
New ID.3 Neo Technology Underneath
The ID.3 GTI is based on the latest ID.3 Neo, benefiting from the newer interior and technology package.
A larger Digital Cockpit and a 12.9-inch Innovision infotainment display sit on the same visual axis. Volkswagen has also introduced a new physical button strip beneath the screen for climate-control functions and the hazard warning lights.
A rotary control in the center console handles volume and media functions.
Buyers will also be able to specify several premium features available on the ID.3 Neo, including a panoramic sunroof, massage and memory functions for the sport seats, a 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system and an augmented-reality head-up display.
V2L Adds More Practicality
The ID.3 GTI is not only about acceleration and handling. Volkswagen is also adding vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, allowing external devices to be powered or charged through an adapter connected to the charging interface.
An optional PowerSocket can therefore turn the electric GTI into a mobile power source. Volkswagen highlights the possibility of using it on weekend trips with two e-bikes, which can be carried using the optional bicycle-carrier bracket and recharged from the vehicle.
The car can support a 75-kg drawbar load for the bicycle-carrier system.
Travel Assist Gets Smarter
The ID.3 GTI will also offer the latest driver-assistance technology, including an updated Travel Assist system and a memory function for Park Assist Pro.
One of the notable additions to Travel Assist is its ability to respond to traffic lights. When the system detects a red light, it can automatically slow the vehicle to a stop as part of its assisted longitudinal and lateral driving functions.
ID.3 GTI Sales Start in 2027
The Volkswagen ID.3 GTI represents a significant evolution of the GTI formula. Instead of abandoning the characteristics that have defined the badge, Volkswagen has attempted to translate them into an electric format through instant torque, rear-wheel drive, adaptive suspension, aggressive styling and a dedicated GTI driving mode.
With 326 PS, 545 Nm, 5.6-second 0-100 km/h acceleration, a 200 km/h top speed and up to 601 km of range, the ID.3 GTI combines hot-hatch performance with the practicality expected from a modern electric vehicle.
Pre-sales are scheduled to begin in early 2027. Volkswagen has not yet announced final pricing for the ID.3 GTI.
