Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) continued their strong momentum in the UK in August, accounting for almost 30% of all new car registrations and becoming the country’s largest single powertrain by market share.
According to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), 27,876 new BEVs were registered in August, representing growth of around 28–30% compared with the same month last year.
The result helped push the UK new car market to its ninth consecutive month of growth, with total registrations reaching 94,236 units.
Electric Cars Capture Almost 30% of UK Market
BEVs accounted for 29.8% of all new car registrations in August, their second-highest monthly share of the year so far.
The growth is particularly notable because August is traditionally one of the UK’s quieter months. Many buyers delay new-car purchases until September, when the next registration plate is introduced.
Despite the seasonal slowdown, electric cars continued to outperform the wider market.
More than 366,000 new electric cars have been registered in the UK during the first eight months of 2026, giving BEVs a year-to-date market share of around 25.5%.
UK New Car Market Grows 13.7%
The wider UK new car market also delivered a strong August.
SMMT figures show that 94,236 new cars were registered, a 13.7% increase from August 2025 and the strongest August since the current twice-yearly number-plate system was introduced.
Growth was recorded across private, fleet and business registrations.
Fleet purchases remained the largest part of the market, increasing 10.1% and accounting for 57.2% of registrations. Private registrations performed even better, rising 19.0% to represent 40.8% of the market.
Business registrations increased 14.5%, although they accounted for just 2.0% of the market.
Electric and electrified vehicles were responsible for much of the growth, with petrol-powered vehicles the only major powertrain category to decline.
Plug-In Hybrids and Hybrids Also See Strong Growth
BEVs were not the only electrified vehicles to post significant gains in August.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) registrations jumped 39.8%, giving the technology a 14.5% share of the UK new car market.
Traditional hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) also performed strongly, with registrations increasing 26.3% and taking a 12.7% market share.
However, battery electric vehicles remain the key technology in the UK’s transition toward zero-emission driving, with their share continuing to rise despite concerns about affordability and charging infrastructure.
More Than 170 Electric Models Now Available
British consumers now have a much wider choice of electric vehicles than just a few years ago.
More than 170 zero-emission models are available across different vehicle segments, while manufacturers are offering increasingly aggressive discounts and incentives to encourage buyers to switch from petrol and diesel.
The combination of greater choice, lower running costs and manufacturer incentives is helping EV adoption. However, purchase prices and charging availability remain important barriers for many drivers.
The UK will need continued investment in public charging infrastructure, particularly fast and affordable chargers, if electric vehicle adoption is to accelerate further.
September Will Be a Key Test for EV Demand
The strong August results provide another indication that electric vehicle demand in the UK is moving in the right direction. However, the next major test will come in September.
The September registration change typically brings substantially higher sales volumes, making it a better indicator of underlying consumer demand than August.
The industry’s performance will also be closely watched as the UK government reviews its ZEV Mandate.
BEV registrations reached roughly 25.6% of the market during the first eight months of 2026, compared with the headline 33% mandate target. Manufacturers have responded with significant discounts and investment, but the gap between regulatory targets and consumer demand remains a major industry issue.
For the EV transition to remain sustainable, the market will need to balance ambitious emissions targets with vehicle affordability, charging infrastructure and the ability of manufacturers to maintain profitable operations in the UK.
