Stellantis Agrees to Sell Free2move Car-Sharing Business to Mutares

Stellantis has signed an agreement to sell its entire stake in the Free2move car-sharing business to investment company Mutares, marking another step in the automaker’s strategy to sharpen its focus on core automotive operations. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

The move aligns with Stellantis’ long-term FaSTLAne 2030 strategy, which prioritises disciplined capital allocation and greater investment in brands, technologies and markets capable of delivering stronger long-term returns.

Free2move to Begin a New Chapter

Free2move operates one of the most geographically diverse car-sharing networks, offering both short- and long-term rentals through its dedicated mobile app. Customers can book vehicles 24 hours a day across 14 cities in Europe and the United States using its free-floating mobility model.

Following the acquisition, Mutares plans to establish Free2move as a new platform within its growing mobility portfolio. The company intends to strengthen fleet management, continue expanding the use of battery-electric vehicles, and improve the customer experience while addressing the evolving mobility needs of cities and municipalities.

Operating independently is also expected to provide Free2move with greater flexibility, dedicated investment and faster decision-making, positioning the business for future growth in the increasingly competitive shared mobility sector.

Stellantis Focuses on Core Automotive Business

By divesting the car-sharing operation, Stellantis aims to concentrate resources on vehicle development, electrification and other strategic initiatives across its global automotive brands.

Virgilio Cerutti, Head of Business Development & Partnerships at Stellantis, said the transaction reinforces the company’s long-term strategy.

“By sharpening our focus on core automotive activities, we strengthen our capacity to deliver long-term performance.”

Cerutti added that Stellantis will work closely with customers, partners and employees to ensure a smooth transition throughout the sale process.

Mutares Sees Growth Potential

Mutares believes Free2move has significant opportunities to strengthen its operations once separated from Stellantis.

Johannes Laumann, Chief Investment Officer at Mutares, described the business as a globally recognised brand with considerable operational potential following the planned carve-out. He said the company looks forward to working alongside the existing management team to build Free2move into a leading independent mobility platform.

Transaction Expected to Close in 2026

The acquisition remains subject to employee consultation procedures, regulatory approvals and other customary legal requirements before completion.

Once finalised, the deal will allow Stellantis to further streamline its business around automotive manufacturing and electrification, while giving Free2move the opportunity to accelerate its development under independent ownership focused exclusively on mobility services.
