BMW iX5 Long-Wheelbase Debuts in China with 1,000 km Range

BMW has unveiled a China-exclusive version of the next-generation X5 alongside the first-ever fully electric BMW iX5, introducing a premium SUV lineup designed specifically for the world’s largest automotive market.

Both models combine the familiar strengths of the X5 with advanced Neue Klasse technologies, a more spacious cabin, and market-specific digital features developed for Chinese customers.

Set to launch in China in 2027, the new BMW X5 and BMW iX5 highlight the brand’s commitment to delivering luxury, innovation and electrification while tailoring vehicles to local customer preferences.

Longer Wheelbase Brings Greater Comfort

One of the biggest differences between the China-exclusive models and global versions is the significantly longer wheelbase.

BMW has extended the wheelbase by 130 mm, resulting in a total wheelbase of 3,165 mm. The extra length improves rear passenger legroom and creates a more spacious cabin, making the SUVs especially appealing to customers who prioritise chauffeur-like comfort.

Beyond increasing interior space, the stretched proportions also give both SUVs a more elegant side profile while improving ride stability and overall driving comfort.

Distinctive Exterior Design

The new BMW X5 and BMW iX5 receive several styling updates exclusive to the Chinese market.

A standout feature is the new diagonal LED light signature, while buyers can optionally choose a distinctive double-X lighting pattern. Additional illuminated elements between the headlights and the BMW Kidney Iconic Glow grille enhance the three-dimensional appearance of the front fascia and are integrated into dynamic welcome and farewell light animations.

The combustion-powered BMW X5 also receives a redesigned front-end treatment tailored specifically for China.

Neue Klasse Interior Meets Premium Luxury

Inside, BMW has blended luxury materials with its latest digital technology to create a more modern cabin experience.

The redesigned interior features clean surfaces, a new monochromatic colour scheme and upgraded seating for both front and rear passengers. Premium materials, including slate and glass accents, reinforce the upscale atmosphere, while a three-dimensional illuminated trim strip adds ambient lighting inspired by BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse architecture.

The dashboard introduces the latest BMW Panoramic iDrive system running BMW Operating System X. Key features include:

– BMW Panoramic Vision display
– Floating free-cut Central Display
– BMW Passenger Screen (available in the X5 for the first time)

Rear passengers also benefit from the next-generation BMW Theatre Screen, offering 8K video streaming, gaming capabilities and video conferencing functions designed to make both entertainment and mobile working more convenient.

AI-Powered Driver Assistance Developed for China

BMW is also introducing an advanced driver assistance system created specifically for Chinese roads.

Developed together with Chinese technology company Momenta, the new system combines locally trained end-to-end artificial intelligence with BMW’s long-standing expertise in vehicle safety and automated driving.

The result is a navigation-guided “Address-to-Address” driving assistance system that works with BMW’s new automated driving computer and the company’s latest “Heart of Joy” control architecture, delivering a smoother and more intelligent driving experience.

BMW iX5 Delivers More Than 1,000 km of Range

The biggest headline belongs to the all-electric BMW iX5.

Built on BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, the electric SUV combines a next-generation high-voltage battery with improved efficiency to achieve a CLTC driving range exceeding 1,000 kilometres.

While official global specifications have yet to be announced, the impressive figure positions the iX5 among the longest-range electric SUVs expected to enter the Chinese market.

Meanwhile, both the BMW X5 and BMW iX5 come standard with adaptive two-axle air suspension, helping deliver the balanced ride comfort and driving dynamics that remain central to BMW’s SUV lineup.

Launch Scheduled for 2027

BMW plans to launch both the long-wheelbase BMW X5 and the fully electric BMW iX5 in China during 2027. The arrival of the electric iX5 marks the first time the X5 will be offered in China with both combustion and fully electric powertrains, while also showcasing how Neue Klasse technologies will shape BMW’s next generation of premium vehicles.

With a larger interior, advanced AI-powered driving assistance, cutting-edge digital features and an electric range exceeding 1,000 km (CLTC), the BMW iX5 represents an important step in BMW’s electrification strategy for the Chinese market.
