Renault has revealed the bold new Renault 4 JP4x4 Concept, making its first public appearance at the Roland-Garros French Open on 18 May 2026. The concept reimagines the spirit of the classic Renault 4 with a playful, open-air design while introducing modern electric performance and all-wheel-drive capability.
Inspired by the iconic Plein Air (1969) and JP4 (1981) variants, the JP4x4 Concept blends retro leisure styling with a distinctly contemporary twist. The result is a compact electric vehicle that feels equally at home on the beach as it does on urban streets.
A Modern Take on Open-Air Driving
Built on the Renault 4 E-Tech electric platform, the JP4x4 Concept is the fourth design study showcasing the versatility of Renault’s latest small EV architecture. Its design leans heavily into freedom and outdoor living, with an open-top layout and minimal barriers between cabin and surroundings.
The exterior stands out in a pearlescent Emerald Green finish—a modern reinterpretation of classic Renault shades—contrasted by a vibrant orange interior. The visual pairing delivers a youthful, energetic look aimed squarely at lifestyle-focused buyers.
Functionality meets creativity throughout the design. The concept features minimalist doors, an openwork roof structure for rigidity, and a drop-down tailgate inspired by pickup trucks, making it easier to load gear. Surfboards and skateboards are integrated into the design theme, reinforcing its leisure-first identity.
Inside, the cabin echoes Renault’s heritage with retro-inspired bucket seats reminiscent of the “Egyptian mummy” style from the 1970s. Textile finishes across the dashboard and door panels add warmth, while a floating centre console enhances the airy, open feel. Practical touches, such as a passenger grab handle, hint at the vehicle’s off-road intentions.
Electric AWD for Adventure
Beyond its design, the JP4x4 Concept signals Renault’s ambitions in expanding electric capability in the B-segment. Based on the same underpinnings as the Renault 4 Savane 4×4 Concept, it features increased ground clearance and a wider track for improved stability.
The standout upgrade is the addition of a second electric motor on the rear axle, enabling permanent all-wheel drive. This setup improves traction and agility across challenging terrain, including sand, gravel, and uneven surfaces—territory rarely associated with small electric cars.
The concept rides on 18-inch wheels fitted with Goodyear UltraGrip Performance+ tyres, further enhancing its off-road readiness. Altogether, it demonstrates how Renault’s compact EV platform can evolve into more capable, adventure-focused vehicles.
A Lifestyle EV with Retro Roots
According to Renault’s design leadership, the JP4x4 Concept was conceived as a vehicle without clear boundaries between interior and exterior. Its bold colour contrasts, 3D-printed side detailing, and open architecture draw inspiration from sportswear and outdoor culture.
More importantly, it reconnects with the carefree spirit of the 1960s and 1970s—an era when cars like the original Renault 4 were synonymous with freedom and exploration.
Renault’s Full Electric Line-Up at Roland-Garros
The JP4x4 Concept headlines a broader electric showcase at Roland-Garros 2026. It is joined by the Renault 4 Roland-Garros E-Tech electric show car, featuring a large retractable canvas roof that floods the cabin with light.
Also on display are the next-generation Twingo E-Tech electric and Renault 5 Roland-Garros E-Tech electric, underlining Renault’s growing commitment to accessible electric mobility across multiple segments.
What It Means for Future EVs
While still a concept, the Renault 4 JP4x4 points to a future where small electric cars are no longer limited to city use. With added versatility, off-road capability, and lifestyle appeal, vehicles like this could open new doors for compact EVs in Europe and beyond.
