2026 Volkswagen ID. Buzz Gets AWD, V2L and Smarter Tech

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz continues to electrify fans of the iconic VW Bus, blending retro design with modern EV technology.

For the 2026 model year, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has rolled out a comprehensive update that enhances performance, usability, and digital features—making the all-electric van more versatile than ever.

With the 2026 update, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz evolves into a more capable and tech-forward electric van. The addition of AWD, V2L functionality, smarter driver assistance, and improved infotainment makes it a stronger contender in the growing electric MPV segment.

New 4MOTION AWD Brings More Power and Capability

One of the biggest upgrades is the introduction of the ID. Buzz Pro 4MOTION, an all-wheel-drive variant that significantly boosts performance and practicality.

The system mirrors the drivetrain of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz GTX, pairing a 210 kW rear motor with an additional front motor for a combined output of 250 kW. This setup delivers improved traction and stronger acceleration, especially in challenging conditions.

Battery options vary by body style:

– Standard wheelbase: 79 kWh usable battery
– Long wheelbase (+25 cm): 86 kWh usable battery

Towing capacity also sees a notable jump. Compared to the rear-wheel-drive version, the AWD model adds 600 kg, reaching:

– Up to 1.8 tonnes (standard wheelbase)
– Up to 1.6 tonnes (long wheelbase)

This makes the ID. Buzz a far more capable option for families, campers, and lifestyle users.

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L): Power on the Go

A major functional upgrade is the addition of vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability. The ID. Buzz can now supply up to 2.0 kW of continuous power via its charging port using a compatible adapter.

This feature transforms the van into a mobile power source, allowing you to:

– Charge e-bikes during trips
– Run camping equipment like electric grills
– Power small appliances on the go

It’s a practical addition that enhances the ID. Buzz’s appeal as an adventure-ready EV.

Smarter Driver Assistance with Connected Travel Assist

Volkswagen has upgraded its driver assistance system, now called Connected Travel Assist, which leverages real-time online data for improved functionality.

New capabilities include:

– Traffic light recognition: The system can detect red lights and automatically bring the vehicle to a stop
– Enhanced assisted driving: Improved lateral and longitudinal guidance

Complementing this is one-pedal driving, enabling the ID. Buzz to decelerate smoothly to a complete stop using regenerative braking alone—making city driving more efficient and intuitive.

New Infotainment System with App Store

The updated ID. Buzz also benefits from Volkswagen’s latest Innovision infotainment system, bringing a more modern and customizable digital experience.

Highlights include:

– Integrated app store with downloadable apps for streaming, charging, parking, and gaming
– Expanded digital services that can be activated on demand
– Improved usability with a redesigned interface

Volkswagen has also responded to customer feedback by replacing touch-sensitive steering wheel controls with physical buttons, improving ergonomics and ease of use.

Design Tweaks and New Color Options

While the overall design remains unchanged, Volkswagen has expanded customization options. The previously GTX-exclusive Cherry Red finish is now available on Pro variants, including a striking Candy White/Cherry Red two-tone combination.

GTX Repositioned as a Sporty Trim

The ID. Buzz GTX remains in the lineup but is no longer the sole high-performance flagship. Instead, it now serves as a sport-oriented trim level, offering unique styling elements alongside the shared 250 kW drivetrain.

For buyers seeking a blend of nostalgia, practicality, and cutting-edge EV features, the ID. Buzz continues to stand out as one of the most distinctive options on the market.
