Despite a turbulent year for the U.S. electric vehicle market, one thing is clear: EV owners have never been happier.
According to the latest 2026 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Ownership Study from J.D. Power, overall satisfaction among battery electric vehicle (BEV) owners has reached its highest level since the study began in 2021. Even more telling, a remarkable 96% of new BEV owners say they would consider buying or leasing another EV for their next vehicle.
EV Market Share Down — But Owner Loyalty Surges
While EV market share dipped sharply following the expiration of the federal tax credit program in September 2025, customer sentiment tells a different story.
Brent Gruber, executive director of the EV practice at J.D. Power, notes that improvements in battery technology, public charging infrastructure, and overall vehicle performance are driving satisfaction to record levels. Importantly, most current EV owners say they would go electric again — even without federal incentives.
For automakers and dealers in the U.S., that’s a strong signal: the foundation of the EV market remains solid, driven by real-world ownership experience rather than subsidies alone.
Public Charging Satisfaction Sees Major Gains
One of the biggest improvements in the 2026 study? Public EV charging availability.
Satisfaction with public charging increased dramatically year over year:
– Premium BEVs: 652 (up 101 points)
– Mass market BEVs: 511 (up 115 points)
The continued expansion of public charging networks — including broader access to the Tesla Supercharger network — has significantly improved the ownership experience, especially for non-Tesla drivers.
Interestingly, Tesla owners themselves are also reporting improved satisfaction as the charging ecosystem evolves.
Premium BEVs Show Strong Quality Improvements
Vehicle quality also improved in 2026, particularly in the premium segment. Premium BEVs reduced total problems to 75.0 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), an improvement of 15.9 PP100 year over year — the best performance recorded for the segment in the study’s history.
Improvements were driven by fewer interior squeaks and rattles, reduced driver assistance system issues and lower incidence of exterior noise complaints.
By comparison, mass market BEVs averaged 92.2 PP100 — still competitive but not as strong as premium models.
BEVs Continue to Outperform PHEVs
Battery electric vehicles continue to outperform plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in overall owner satisfaction.
Average scores in 2026:
– Premium BEVs: 786
– Mass market BEVs: 727
– Premium PHEVs: 756
– Mass market PHEVs: 658
The biggest gap comes in cost of ownership, where BEVs significantly outscore PHEVs. While PHEVs improve on traditional internal combustion vehicles, they still require engine maintenance — an expense BEV owners completely avoid.
For U.S. consumers weighing BEV vs. PHEV, the ownership cost advantage of full EVs remains a powerful differentiator.
2026 EV Ownership Rankings: Tesla and Ford Lead
Overall & Premium Segment
The Tesla Model 3 ranks highest overall and tops the premium BEV segment with a score of 804. Other top performers include:
– Tesla Model Y – 797
– BMW i4 – 795
Premium BEV satisfaction rose significantly year over year, from 756 to 786.
Mass Market Segment
The Ford Mustang Mach-E ranks highest in the mass market BEV segment with a score of 760. Rounding out the top three:
– Hyundai IONIQ 6 – 748
– Kia EV9 – 745
Mass market BEV satisfaction increased slightly to 727, up from 725 in 2025.
Notably, no PHEV models were award-eligible this year.

Now in its sixth year, the EVX Ownership Study focuses on the crucial first year of EV ownership. The overall index measures satisfaction across 10 key factors:
- Accuracy of stated battery range
- Availability of public charging
- Battery range
- Cost of ownership
- Driving enjoyment
- Ease of home charging
- Interior and exterior styling
- Safety and technology features
- Service experience
- Vehicle quality and reliability
The 2026 study surveyed 5,741 owners of 2025 and 2026 model-year BEVs and PHEVs between August and December 2025, in collaboration with PlugShare.

With public charging improving, vehicle quality rising, and ownership costs remaining attractive, current EV drivers are overwhelmingly committed to staying electric.
