Volvo Buses Secures Order For 47 Electric Buses In Sweden’s Skåne Region

Volvo Buses has received an order for 47 battery-electric buses from Bergkvara to support public transport operations across Sweden’s Skåne region. The agreement further strengthens the transition toward zero-emission public transport in one of the country’s busiest commuter corridors.

The order includes Volvo’s 8900 Electric model, designed for both city and intercity transport. The electric buses will operate on local and regional routes managed by public transport authority Skånetrafiken, including services in the city of Trelleborg.

Bergkvara, one of Sweden’s largest bus operators with more than 1,350 buses in service, selected the Volvo 8900 Electric for its combination of efficiency, reliability, low operating costs, and quiet operation. The buses are expected to improve passenger comfort while helping reduce emissions and noise pollution in urban areas.

According to Volvo Buses, the contract covers 47 units of the Volvo 8900 Electric in both 4×2 and 6×2 configurations. Depending on the model, the buses will feature either five or six battery packs integrated into the electric driveline.

Martin Spjern, Country Manager Sweden at Volvo Buses, said the deal highlights confidence in Volvo’s electric mobility solutions and reflects the growing demand for sustainable transport with strong total cost of ownership performance.

Hans Nilsson, CEO of Bergkvara, noted that the company is continuing to expand investments in sustainable and safe passenger transport and looks forward to deploying the new electric buses across Skåne and Trelleborg.

In addition to the vehicles, Bergkvara will gain access to Volvo Buses’ wider ecosystem of services and support solutions designed to maximize uptime and operational efficiency.

The new battery-electric buses are scheduled to enter service by the end of 2027.

Volvo Buses has been active in electromobility since 2017 and currently offers a growing portfolio of electric transit solutions, including the Volvo 7900 Electric, Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated, Volvo 8900 Electric, and the Volvo BZR and BZL electric platforms.
