2026 Toyota RAV4 PHEV Launches in Japan with 150 km EV Range

Toyota Motor Corporation has confirmed that the all-new RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) will go on sale in Japan on March 9, 2026, expanding the sixth-generation RAV4 lineup with more power, longer electric range and a new GR SPORT variant.

Built around the concept of “Life is an Adventure,” the new RAV4 PHEV blends serious off-road capability with extended zero-emission driving and practical power supply features — reinforcing Toyota’s multi-pathway approach to electrification.

Up to 150 km EV Range and 242 kW of Power

The headline figure is the significantly improved BEV-mode driving range.

Thanks to a newly developed large-capacity battery and silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors in the power control unit, the 2026 RAV4 PHEV now delivers:

– Up to 150 km (92 miles) of EV-only range (up from 95 km previously)
– 242 kW (329 PS) maximum system output
– Support for high-output charging

That extended electric range means many drivers can complete daily commuting, school runs and shopping trips without using petrol at all — while still retaining the flexibility of a hybrid powertrain for longer journeys.

Toyota says the new plug-in system achieves world-leading energy efficiency, combining strong performance with lower environmental impact.

Outdoor Power Supply and Emergency Backup

Beyond driving, the RAV4 PHEV doubles as a mobile power source. The vehicle features a 100V external power supply (up to 1,500W) via:

– A luggage-area outlet
– A vehicle power connector that plugs into the charging inlet

This enables owners to run household appliances outdoors — ideal for camping, worksites or leisure use.

In emergency situations such as power outages, the RAV4 PHEV can provide electricity for:

– Approx. 6.5 days at a 400W load (HV Power Supply Mode)
– Up to 7 days when prioritising extended supply time

That functionality strengthens its appeal as both a family SUV and a disaster-resilient energy solution.

New GR SPORT Variant Joins the Line-Up

Toyota RAV4 GR SPORT has been added to the range, bringing motorsport-inspired upgrades to the plug-in hybrid.

The GR SPORT focuses on handling precision and aerodynamic balance, featuring front lip spoiler and wing-type rear spoiler, GR Performance Dampers, reinforced GR braces, specially tuned suspension and lower centre of gravity via battery integration.

Toyota says repeated CFD simulations and wind tunnel testing helped optimise downforce across low, medium and high speeds, improving stability and controllability.

The result is a PHEV SUV that promises both efficiency and sharper, more engaging driving dynamics.

Pricing and Sales Targets (Japan)

Toyota plans to sell 700 PHEV units per month in Japan.

Japanese pricing (including tax):

– RAV4 PHEV Z: ¥6,000,000 (approx. $38,700)
– RAV4 PHEV GR SPORT: ¥6,300,000 (approx. $40,650)

Toyota’s Broader Electrification Strategy

Toyota continues to position PHEVs as a critical step toward carbon neutrality. Rather than focusing solely on battery electric vehicles, the company is pursuing a multi-pathway approach — offering hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electric and other powertrains to meet different regional needs.

With its extended electric range, strong output and real-world utility features, the 2026 RAV4 PHEV represents a major evolution of one of the world’s most popular SUVs — delivering more electric capability without sacrificing versatility.

For now, the new model is confirmed for Japan, but similar updates could eventually appear in other markets where the RAV4 PHEV already plays a key role in Toyota’s electrified lineup.
