Bolt Partners with Pony.ai to Bring Robotaxis to Europe by 2026

The race for autonomous driving is heating up in Europe. Bolt, the Estonian ride-hailing giant, announced a strategic partnership with Chinese autonomous driving firm Pony.ai to introduce fully driverless cars to Bolt’s taxi fleet across the EU.

The two companies plan to rigorously test and validate the safety of the driverless capabilities before rolling them out publicly.

Bolt CEO Markus Villig is optimistic about the speed of adoption. He aims to have these vehicles operational within a year of the initial deployments, which are currently slated for 2026.

“Bolt’s ambition is to be one of the first platforms to provide fully driverless autonomous vehicles in the EU.” — Markus Villig, CEO of Bolt

The road ahead isn’t without bumps. Currently, the autonomous driving sector is dominated by U.S. giants (like Waymo and Tesla) and Chinese competitors. However, with Chinese firms largely blocked from the U.S. market, companies like Pony.ai are pivoting to Europe—setting up HQs and striking deals, such as Pony.ai’s recent agreement with Stellantis.

The challenge? European regulations are strict. Most countries currently restrict public deployment to basic “Level 2” systems (where drivers must remain in control). Villig believes Europe needs to adapt quickly to avoid stagnation.

“Europe cannot afford to make the same mistake with autonomous vehicles,” Villig warned, noting that outdated licensing laws have already stifled the ride-hailing market in many countries.
