BYD Recalls Over 88K Plug-In Hybrids In China Due To Battery Risks

Chinese biggest new energy vehicle maker BYD announced the immediate recall of 88,981 plug-in hybrid vehicles in China, just weeks after its largest recall to date.

According to a notice released on Friday, November 28, the recall targets the popular Qin PLUS DM-i models produced between January 2021 and September 2023.

Regulators have identified a defect in the production process regarding the battery packs. If your vehicle is affected, you might experience a sudden loss of power output.

In severe scenarios, the car will completely lose the ability to drive in pure electric mode, forcing a switch to the combustion engine or potentially leaving drivers in a vulnerable position.

This recall brings BYD’s total for the year to over 210,000 units.

– September: ~97,000 Dolphin and Yuan Plus EVs due to a manufacturing fault involving a steering control unit that posed risks of fire.
– October: ~115,000 Tang and Yuan Pro vehicles produced between 2015 and 2022 due to design defects and battery-related safety risks.

Through October, BYD’s sales dropped 12.13% from the same period last year.
