GM August EV sales jump to monthly record

U.S. electric vehicle sales likely set an all-time monthly record in August, as customers rushed to make purchases ahead of the expiration of Federal EV tax credits.

This surge had a significant impact on General Motors, which sold more than 21,000 EVs from its Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC brands, solidifying its position as the second-largest EV seller in the country.

This strong performance was driven by popular models like the Chevrolet Equinox EV, the Cadillac LYRIQ, and the GMC Sierra EV. GM is confident that this wave of new buyers will have a lasting effect, given its high customer loyalty and the strong commitment EV owners have to the technology.

With the federal tax credits ending on September 30, the EV landscape is about to shift. A temporary slowdown in sales is expected in the fourth quarter as the market adjusts. However, GM believes it is well-positioned to continue growing its market share despite the changes.

Their confidence stems from a diverse vehicle portfolio that caters to different segments of the market. Long before the recent tax credit legislation, the most popular segments were affordable EVs and luxury models. GM has a strong foothold in both with the elegant Cadillac lineup, the Chevrolet Equinox EV, and the soon-to-be-released Chevrolet Bolt. They also boast an unmatched lineup of EV trucks and SUVs, including the GMC HUMMER, known for their style, performance, and impressive range.

The post-tax credit environment may also lead to a more stable and less competitive market. With some “marginal competitors” scaling back their production and plans, the industry could see an end to the overproduction and steep discounts that have been common. This will create a healthier, more rational market for both consumers and manufacturers.

Another key factor in long-term EV adoption is the expansion of the charging infrastructure. The charging experience for drivers is improving daily as companies like GM Energy, EVGo, and IONNA build out the public fast-charging network. By the end of this year, GM customers will have access to over 65,000 fast-charging bays, with plans to expand that number to more than 100,000 by the end of 2027—a 50% increase in just three years.
