Magna Shows Fuel-Cell Range-Extended Electric Vehicle in Geneva

Canadian supplier Magna International is showcasing its contract manufacturing expertise as well as its drivable FCREEV concept vehicle at this year’s International Geneva Motor Show.

The FCREEV concept – a Fuel-Cell Range-Extended Electric Vehicle – combines the benefits of zero-emissions electric driving with the advantages of fast-filling hydrogen fuel tanks, providing an impressive solution for achieving long ranges while driving emissions-free.

“One of our strengths is our contract manufacturing expertise, which puts Magna in a unique position in the global automotive supply industry. We will continue to expand in this area thanks to the trust of our customers,” said Günther Apfalter, President Magna International Europe & Magna Steyr. “In tandem we are also able to combine drive technologies in such a way that customers can benefit from high-performance, cost-effective vehicle concepts.”

The FCREEV concept, built by subsidiary Magna Steyr in Austria, is a debadged Mercedes Viano minivan packing a smaller-than-average fuel-cell to recharge its battery on the move.

Its range is 350 km (217 miles), about 70 km (43.5 miles) of which can be on battery power alone from 16 kWh lithium ion battery pack. The fuel-cell stack is rated at 30 kWh, compared to 114 kWh in the Toyota Mirai fuel-cell vehicle.
