GM Offers Affordable Chevrolet Volt Home Charger

General Motors is offering new Chevrolet Volt owners the chance to save money on their home charging units.

Chevrolet’s Voltec 240 volt charging unit is one of several home models that will be sold for $490 by SPX Service Solutions, a national provider of home charging installation services and equipment.

But that is without an installation charge which is estimated at $1,475. That means the average cost to buy and install the Voltec 240 quick charger is closer to $2000. General Motors also points out that the actual installation cost can vary, meaning that it might be less than the estimated $1,475… but it might also be more.

Nissan’s charging partner, Aerovironment, provides a similar service to Nissan LEAF drivers and says its charger will cost $2,200, installed.

The Voltec 240V home charging unit can charge the Chevy Volt’s battery from depleted to charged in about four hours, compared with 10 hours with the standard 120V charge cord that plugs into a household outlet.

In addition to Chevrolet’s Voltec unit, SPX will sell a variety of home charging stations and manage all aspects of installation for Volt owners, including the home survey, installation, permitting, Department of Energy and utility coordination, and identification of available programs and incentives for reduced charging rates.
