All-electric Mitsubishi eX Concept Shows Off New Design Language

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation will unveil the Mitsubishi eX Concept, a compact SUV concept car that showcases a next-generation EV system and new design language, at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show.

The Mitsubishi eX Concept is a vision for a unique all electric powered compact SUV aimed at the fast growing compact SUV market. It uses Mitsubishi’s state-of-the art EV and all-wheel control technologies combined with automated driving, connected car, and active safety systems.

The eX Concept crossover is envisioned as driving some 400 kilometers (250 miles) on its fully charged lithium ion batteries. Mitsubishi also aims to achieve that range by 2020. Mitsubishi says it aims to deliver a 250-mile range by doubling the energy density of its batteries in the next five years.
Mitsubishi-eX-Concept_2The Mitsubishi eX achieves four-wheel drive through two 70-kilowatt electric motors, one in the front, the other in the rear. The battery capacity is billed as 45 kilowatt-hours.

Both exterior and interior design indicate the direction Mitsubishi Design is taking. Overall, it evokes the image of a sporty crossover zipping nimbly around town as it merges the elegance and stylishness of a “shooting brake” (a luxury and sporty estate wagon) with compact SUV lines. The front end is a new interpretation of the Dynamic Shield front design concept.

The path to the Mitsubishi eX Concept will be told through a panel display telling the story of 50 years of MMC’s research and development in the field of EV development.
