NIO’s electric compact car brand firefly has introduced a new 60 kWh battery pack, extending the model’s CLTC driving range to up to 560 km (348 miles). The upgrade gives the premium electric hatchback a longer-range option while maintaining its existing acceleration performance and energy efficiency.
With the new battery, the firefly starts at RMB 136,800 (approximately $20,500) when purchased outright. Buyers opting for NIO’s Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) subscription can purchase the vehicle from RMB 79,800 (approximately $12,000), with a separate monthly battery rental fee of RMB 599 ($90).
The new battery expands the firefly lineup’s appeal, offering drivers more flexibility for daily commuting, local trips and longer journeys.
The new 60 kWh battery uses nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) chemistry and delivers a claimed CLTC range of up to 560 km. It joins the existing 42 kWh standard-range battery, allowing customers to choose between the two capacities based on their driving needs.
The larger battery is particularly relevant for drivers who regularly travel longer distances and want fewer charging stops. Despite the increased capacity, firefly says the upgrade maintains the car’s existing acceleration characteristics and energy efficiency.
The 560 km figure is based on China’s CLTC testing cycle, which is generally more optimistic than the WLTP and EPA standards used in other markets. Real-world range will depend on driving conditions, speed, temperature and other factors.
Firefly says its batteries follow the same safety standards as NIO, undergoing 14 rigorous safety tests that exceed China’s national requirements.
The battery pack incorporates an all-aluminum grid structure and cross-shaped anti-collision beams designed to improve structural protection. Its architecture also physically separates liquid and electrical components, helping reduce potential safety risks.
The new 60 kWh NCM battery adds multiple thermal protection measures tailored to the chemistry’s specific requirements. These measures strengthen thermal isolation and provide additional protection against thermal runaway, a dangerous condition in which a battery cell experiences an uncontrolled rise in temperature.
These safety enhancements are particularly important as automakers introduce higher-capacity batteries to extend driving range without changing vehicle size.
Beyond safety and range, firefly is emphasizing battery longevity. The company follows NIO’s long-life battery technology strategy, combining cell-level improvements with battery management and operational technologies intended to slow degradation.
Five technologies contribute to this approach: low-lithium-loss anodes, passivated cathodes, biomimetic self-healing electrolytes, electrode microstructure engineering and adaptive swelling-force management.
Working together, these technologies are designed to reduce battery degradation and help preserve performance over the pack’s service life.
For electric car owners, battery longevity can influence long-term ownership costs, vehicle resale value and confidence in using the car for many years. However, actual battery life will depend on usage patterns, charging habits, climate and other operating conditions.
One of the most notable aspects of the new battery is that it highlights firefly’s upgrade-ready vehicle architecture.
The model was developed around a standardized battery module design capable of accommodating different battery capacities. As a result, existing owners can also choose to permanently upgrade their vehicles to the new 60 kWh battery, according to the company.
This approach could offer an alternative to replacing an entire vehicle when a driver needs more range. Availability, pricing and the practical requirements for upgrading an existing car will be important considerations for owners interested in making the switch.
Firefly also benefits from NIO’s battery-swapping network, supporting the brand’s broader approach to electric mobility through rechargeable, swappable and upgradeable batteries.
Battery swapping can provide an alternative to conventional charging where compatible stations are available, while upgradeable battery packs give customers more flexibility as their driving needs change.
Firefly Surpasses 90,000 Deliveries
Since entering the market, firefly has delivered more than 90,000 vehicles, according to the company, maintaining its position in China’s premium smart electric compact car segment.
The introduction of the 60 kWh battery strengthens the model’s lineup by addressing one of the most important considerations for electric car buyers: driving range. Combined with the existing 42 kWh option, the expanded battery offering allows firefly to target drivers with different budgets and travel requirements.
The new pack also demonstrates the potential benefits of designing an electric vehicle around upgradeable battery hardware from the beginning. Rather than limiting customers to a single battery configuration, firefly can offer additional range while retaining the same basic vehicle architecture.
For NIO, the strategy connects vehicle sales with its wider battery technology and energy services ecosystem. For firefly customers, the biggest benefit is greater choice, with the option of a longer-range battery today and a potential upgrade path for existing vehicles.
The 60 kWh firefly is currently positioned for the Chinese market, and its 560 km CLTC range and RMB pricing should be considered in that context. Details about availability and specifications in other markets would be needed before assessing its prospects internationally.
