Changan Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV Launches in the UK With 62-Mile Electric Range

Changan has introduced the new Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV to the UK market, expanding its Deepal line-up with a plug-in hybrid SUV that combines electric driving with petrol-powered range flexibility. Priced from £32,990, the new model joins the all-electric Deepal S05 and Deepal S07, offering drivers an alternative to a fully electric vehicle without relying entirely on public charging infrastructure.

The Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV is designed to operate primarily as an electric vehicle, using its electric motor to drive the front wheels in most conditions. Its petrol engine mainly generates electricity to support the powertrain, while a mechanical connection to the wheels is available under specific high-speed driving conditions.

With up to 62 miles of WLTP electric range and a claimed combined driving range of up to 648 miles, the new plug-in hybrid is designed to handle everyday journeys on electric power while retaining the flexibility needed for longer trips.

The Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV is available in two trim levels, Pro and Max, through Changan UK’s dealer network.

Changan Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV: Powertrain and Performance

The Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV combines a 172 kW permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine rated at 63 kW. Total system output reaches 190 kW, equivalent to 258 PS or 255 bhp.
Power is delivered to the front wheels through the electric motor, allowing the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 7.9 seconds.

An 18.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplies energy to the electric drive system. Changan uses the same battery chemistry in the all-electric Deepal S05, citing its durability and thermal stability. A 51-litre petrol tank provides additional energy capacity for longer journeys.

Unlike conventional hybrids, the Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV generally uses its petrol engine to generate electricity rather than directly powering the wheels. The engine is paired with a separate generator, which can supply electricity to the drive motor or replenish the battery.

A wet clutch allows the petrol engine to connect mechanically to the driveline when additional power and efficiency are required at speeds above 60 mph. Under normal driving conditions, the clutch remains disengaged, keeping the engine mechanically separated from the wheels.

Changan says this electric-first configuration is intended to deliver consistent electric-motor responsiveness even when the battery charge is low.

An optional detachable tow bar increases the SUV’s versatility, allowing it to tow up to 1,600 kg when braked.

Up to 62 Miles of Electric Range and 648 Miles Combined

The Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV offers a claimed electric range of up to 62 miles under the WLTP testing cycle. That figure could cover many daily commutes, school runs and shopping trips without requiring the petrol engine to provide propulsion or generate electricity for most of the journey.

When the battery and petrol engine are used together, the SUV’s claimed combined range increases to as much as 648 miles.

Changan quotes weighted combined fuel consumption of 139.2 mpg and CO₂ emissions of 47 g/km under WLTP testing. With the battery depleted, the stated fuel economy is 52.3 mpg.

As with other plug-in hybrids, real-world fuel consumption will depend heavily on charging frequency, journey length, driving conditions and how much of the vehicle’s mileage is completed using electric power.

For drivers who can charge regularly at home or at work, the electric range could reduce petrol consumption on shorter journeys. Those who frequently travel longer distances can use the petrol engine to extend the vehicle’s overall range.

DC Rapid Charging Sets It Apart From Many Plug-In Hybrids

One of the Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV’s notable features is its support for DC rapid charging, which remains relatively uncommon among plug-in hybrid SUVs.

The vehicle supports DC charging at up to 55 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 30% to 80% in approximately 15 minutes under suitable conditions. AC charging is supported at up to 11 kW.

The ability to use both AC and DC charging gives owners additional flexibility, particularly when charging away from home. However, actual charging times will depend on factors such as battery temperature, charger output and charging conditions.

The SUV also offers several energy-management settings through its central touchscreen.

EV mode prioritises battery power, with the petrol engine able to start under certain conditions, including hard acceleration or when additional energy is needed. A Pure EV setting is available for battery-only driving.

Hybrid Auto automatically balances battery use and petrol-engine operation. Hybrid Manual allows drivers to select a target battery charge level between 30% and 80%, helping preserve electric range for a particular section of a journey, such as driving through a city after a motorway trip.

Additional settings include Eco, Comfort, Sport and Custom driving modes, alongside Emergency Mode, Stationary Self-Charge and Comfort Braking.

European-Inspired Exterior Design

The Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV carries over the exterior styling of the all-electric Deepal S05. The design was developed at Changan’s European design centre in Turin, Italy, and the Deepal S05 received a German iF Design Award in 2025.

The SUV features frameless doors, flush door handles, full-width LED rear lighting and an aerodynamic profile with a drag coefficient of 0.29 Cd.

Measuring 4,598 mm long, the Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV has a 2,880 mm wheelbase, providing a substantial footprint for a family-oriented SUV.

Available exterior colours include Andromeda Blue, Mercury Silver, Moonlight White, Deep Space Black and Ganymede Grey. Buyers can choose between black and orange interior finishes.

Spacious Interior and Up to 1,310 Litres of Boot Space

Inside, the Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV features a minimalist cabin centred around a 15.4-inch high-definition touchscreen. The display supports the vehicle’s infotainment system, navigation and energy-management controls.

Max versions add a tilting touchscreen designed to adjust towards or away from the driver, helping reduce glare. Vegan leather upholstery and electrically adjustable front seats are included across the range, while the Max adds 64-colour ambient lighting.

Rear passengers benefit from the SUV’s 2,880 mm wheelbase, while folding the rear seats completely flat increases cargo capacity for larger items.

Boot capacity stands at 552 litres with the rear seats in place, with an additional 60 litres of underfloor storage. Folding the rear seats expands the main luggage capacity to 1,310 litres.

These figures, combined with the optional 1,600 kg braked towing capacity, position the Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV as a practical option for families who need passenger space and occasional extra carrying capacity.

Technology, Connectivity and Safety Equipment

Both the Pro and Max trims receive a comprehensive technology package, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, online navigation, voice control and over-the-air software updates.

A 360-degree camera system with Changan’s Transparent Chassis view is also standard, helping drivers assess the area around the vehicle when manoeuvring.

The Pro comes with an eight-speaker audio system, while the Max upgrades to a 14-speaker setup. Other Max-exclusive features include a 50 W wireless smartphone charger and an augmented reality head-up display.

Safety is another key part of the package. Changan states that the Deepal S05 has received the maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating. The Ultra PHEV is equipped with 17 driver-assistance systems supporting SAE Level 2 assisted driving.

The supporting hardware comprises 14 sensors: six ultrasonic sensors, three millimetre-wave radars, four surround-view cameras and one high-definition camera.

As with other Level 2 systems, the driver remains responsible for supervising the vehicle and maintaining control.

Changan Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV Pro vs Max

The entry-level Pro starts at £32,990, while the more extensively equipped Max costs £34,990.

The Pro includes the 15.4-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone connectivity, online navigation, voice control, over-the-air updates, vegan leather upholstery, electrically adjustable front seats, the 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control and an eight-speaker audio system.

The Max adds a tilting touchscreen, an augmented reality head-up display, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats with memory, comfort entry, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, 64-colour ambient lighting, 50 W wireless charging and the upgraded 14-speaker audio system.

Optional equipment includes a panoramic roof with an electric sunblind for the Max at £1,000, a detachable tow bar for either trim at £700, and 20-inch alloy wheels for the Max at £800.

All listed paint options except Ganymede Grey cost an additional £900.
