Polestar is looking ahead to the end of the decade with a new concept called Formula 2030, a futuristic electric performance car designed to preview the brand’s next generation of vehicles, including the upcoming Polestar 2 and Polestar 7.
The concept forms part of Polestar’s broader 2030 strategy as the Swedish EV maker looks to strengthen its position, grow sales and move toward profitability. It also marks the beginning of a new design direction under Polestar Head of Design Philipp Römers.
While the full concept has not yet been revealed, Polestar has released a teaser image showing a low-slung performance car with an aggressive front end and a motorsport-inspired vertical windshield wiper.
The Formula 2030 concept will initially be shown to Polestar investors, retailers and a select group of VIP customers during an exclusive strategy event at The Cube, the company’s headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden. A full global debut is planned for later this year.
Formula 2030 previews the next Polestar 2 and Polestar 7
Polestar says Formula 2030 will provide an early look at design elements expected to appear on the new Polestar 2, scheduled to launch in 2027, as well as the forthcoming Polestar 7.
Rather than abandoning its current design language, Polestar is describing the new direction as a bold evolution.
The teaser suggests a much lower and wider stance than the company’s current SUVs and crossovers. The front fascia emphasizes the car’s width, giving it a particularly aggressive appearance and a more planted stance than previous Polestar models.
The concept also retains recognizable Polestar design cues, including the brand’s signature Dual Blade headlights.
“Polestar’s design and brand is already so strong, it was obvious we needed a bold evolution not revolution of what came before,” said Philipp Römers, Head of Design at Polestar.
“Formula 2030 delivers this, showcasing our future while respecting brand-defining elements like the familiar Dual Blade headlights ensuring it remains recognisably a Polestar with a strong, characterful identity.”
The approach suggests Polestar is not looking for a complete visual reset. Instead, the company plans to evolve its minimalist Scandinavian design while pushing further into performance, technology, material innovation and sustainability.
A low-slung EV in a crossover-dominated market
The Formula 2030 teaser appears to depict a sedan or fastback-style performance EV rather than another high-riding crossover.
That could be significant for the upcoming Polestar 2. The original Polestar 2 became the company’s best-selling model, with more than 190,000 units sold globally according to the automaker.
Its replacement will therefore have considerable expectations to meet when it arrives in 2027.
The Polestar 7 could potentially have an easier path to higher sales volumes, however. Consumer demand continues to shift toward SUVs and crossovers, making the upcoming model an important part of Polestar’s future product strategy.
The company recently expanded its SUV lineup with the Polestar 4 and is positioning its future range around a combination of performance, technology and more practical body styles.
Polestar faces a challenging road to 2030
The Formula 2030 concept arrives at an important moment for Polestar.
The company started 2026 with its strongest first quarter on record, but its financial performance later in the year raised concerns among investors. Following the release of its first-half 2026 results, Polestar’s shares dropped sharply.
Vehicle sales increased just 0.4% year over year, while revenue declined 4.4%. Polestar also reported a net loss of $842 million for the first half of 2026, although operational losses were reduced by 43%.
The company subsequently lowered its full-year growth outlook from the low double digits to the low- to mid-single digits.
Polestar is also facing a major challenge in the U.S. market.
The company says U.S. authorities denied authorization for it to sell model-year 2027 and newer vehicles under the Connected Vehicle Rule. Polestar can continue selling eligible earlier-model-year inventory, but expects new-car sales in the United States to end once that inventory is exhausted.
That makes the success of its next-generation vehicles even more important as Polestar works toward its 2030 goals.
Full Polestar Formula 2030 reveal coming later this year
For now, Polestar is keeping most of Formula 2030 under wraps. The company has released only a dark teaser image showing the front portion of the concept, leaving its side profile, rear design and interior undisclosed.
A full global reveal is expected later this year during the media drive for the Polestar 4.
The concept itself will not necessarily become a production vehicle, but its design cues are expected to influence the next generation of Polestar models.
With the 2027 Polestar 2 and Polestar 7 both on the horizon, Formula 2030 offers an early indication of how the Swedish EV brand intends to look as it enters the next stage of its development.
For Polestar, the challenge will be turning that striking new design direction into vehicles that can attract buyers, grow sales and ultimately help deliver the profitability targeted by its 2030 strategy.
