VinFast Launches All-Electric Taxi Service in Los Angeles

Vietnamese automaker VinFast is expanding its presence in the United States through a new mobility venture, as Green SM officially launches its all-electric ride-hailing service in Los Angeles, California. The service marks the company’s first entry into North America and introduces a fleet of VinFast VF8 electric SUVs to one of the country’s most competitive transportation markets.

Green SM, a mobility company owned by Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup, is rolling out an initial fleet of 500 electric vehicles in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Times. The service operates exclusively with electric vehicles and aims to differentiate itself through professionally trained drivers, consistent service quality and competitive fares.

The launch could also give VinFast greater visibility in the US, where the automaker has struggled to establish a significant foothold in the passenger vehicle market.

Los Angeles is Green SM’s first North American market and its ninth globally, following its expansion across markets in Asia and Europe. The company says its service is designed to cover everyday trips, longer journeys and airport transfers.

Unlike traditional ride-hailing platforms that largely rely on independent drivers, Green SM emphasizes a professionally managed workforce. Its drivers receive training and work full-time, allowing the company to focus on reliability, safety and the overall passenger experience.

Green SM US CEO Hoang Thanh Hang said the American market represents an important milestone for the company’s international expansion. She added that building a successful electric mobility service requires more than an all-electric fleet, highlighting the importance of trained drivers, service quality and customer care.

Customers in Los Angeles can book a Green SM ride through the company’s smartphone app, call its hotline or hail an available vehicle on the street.

Fares depend on factors such as travel distance and time, while introductory promotions are designed to encourage new customers to try the service.

New users who sign up for Green SM can receive 50% off their first five rides, with a maximum discount of $12 per trip. Customers can also receive a complimentary Green Pass membership, which includes 10 discount vouchers per month. Each voucher offers 30% off a fare, up to $10 per ride.

The promotional offers could help Green SM attract passengers as it builds awareness and competes with more established transportation providers in Los Angeles.

VinFast has faced significant challenges in the American electric vehicle market. Its sales have remained limited, and its dealership footprint is relatively small compared with those of established automakers.

The company’s ride-hailing expansion offers a different route to reaching American consumers. Instead of relying exclusively on private buyers, Green SM can put VinFast vehicles into daily service, exposing more passengers to the brand and its electric SUVs.

That strategy could provide practical benefits for VinFast. Passengers may become familiar with the VF8’s interior, comfort and driving experience before considering an electric vehicle purchase. A commercial fleet could also create additional opportunities to demonstrate the vehicles in real-world conditions.

However, a successful taxi operation does not automatically translate into higher private vehicle sales. Green SM will still need to demonstrate reliable service, competitive pricing and sufficient vehicle availability to win customers from established rivals.

VinFast continues to pursue the US market despite its early sales challenges. The automaker has introduced the 2027 VF8, which features an updated driver-assistance suite and a reported starting price of $40,400.

The VF8 is a key model for the brand, and its deployment in Green SM’s Los Angeles fleet could help increase public exposure to the electric crossover. Operating the vehicles as taxis may also give the company an opportunity to showcase its technology and customer-focused features to a wider audience.
