Volkswagen Launches Smart eBike With Rear Camera, Radar Safety and HUD Glasses

Volkswagen is bringing automotive safety technology to the world of electric bicycles with a new premium eBike range featuring an integrated rear-view camera, radar-based blind-spot alerts, intelligent lighting and futuristic head-up display glasses.

Developed by premium eBike manufacturer n+ under license from Volkswagen, the new electric bicycles are designed around the same safety-first philosophy used in modern Volkswagen vehicles. Instead of focusing only on larger batteries and more powerful motors, the company is aiming to make urban cycling safer by improving rider awareness and visibility.

The result is an advanced eBike ecosystem that combines automotive-inspired technology with everyday micromobility.

Volkswagen eBike Introduces Smart View Rear Camera System

The centerpiece of the new Volkswagen eBike range is Smart View, an integrated rear-view camera and radar monitoring system designed to solve one of the biggest challenges for cyclists: seeing what is happening behind them without taking their eyes off the road.

The high-definition rear camera is mounted on the rear mudguard and sends a live video feed to a display built directly into the handlebars. Similar to digital camera mirrors found in some modern vehicles, the system allows riders to monitor approaching traffic while maintaining focus ahead.

Smart View also includes radar-assisted blind-spot alerts that can detect approaching vehicles and warn riders of potential hazards. The technology is designed to improve situational awareness, especially on busy urban roads where cyclists often share space with larger vehicles.

Automotive-Inspired Smart Lighting Improves Visibility

Volkswagen and n+ have also introduced an advanced lighting system designed to help other road users better understand a cyclist’s movements.

A full-length LED strip runs through the eBike’s top tube, creating a highly visible daytime running light inspired by Volkswagen’s automotive lighting design. The system changes color to communicate rider intentions:

– White illumination acts as a visibility light during riding
– Red lighting activates during braking
– Amber lighting signals turning movements

By adding brake and turn indicators commonly found on passenger vehicles, Volkswagen aims to reduce accidents caused by drivers failing to anticipate cyclist movements.

Smart Helmet Adds Crash Detection and Connected Safety

The Volkswagen Smart Helmet extends the bike’s safety features beyond the frame.

Connected to the eBike through Bluetooth, the helmet synchronizes with the bicycle’s lighting system, allowing rear-facing signals for braking and turning to be displayed more clearly to surrounding traffic.

The helmet also includes a built-in accelerometer capable of detecting crashes. In the event of an accident, the system can automatically send emergency notifications to selected contacts, helping riders receive assistance faster.

Smart Glasses Bring Head-Up Display Technology to Cycling

The most futuristic part of the Volkswagen eBike ecosystem is the Smart Glasses system, which brings automotive head-up display technology to two-wheel mobility.

Inspired by fighter pilot helmet displays and modern vehicle HUD systems, the glasses can project important information directly into the rider’s field of vision.

The system can display:

– Navigation directions
– Blind-spot warnings
– Ride information
– Safety alerts

The goal is to provide useful information without forcing riders to look down at a screen or remove attention from the road.

The Smart Glasses are also designed for use beyond cycling, offering potential applications for motorcycle riders, outdoor sports and other connected mobility experiences.

Volkswagen eBike Combines Premium Design With Advanced Technology

The new Volkswagen-licensed eBikes are developed by n+ and reflect Volkswagen’s approach to modern mobility, combining design, technology and safety.

According to Peter Jost, CEO of Volkswagen Accessories, Lifestyle & Licensing Business, technologies traditionally associated with vehicles are now being adapted for eBikes, demonstrating how automotive innovations can evolve for new forms of transportation.

The new eBike range includes:

– Integrated high-definition rear-view camera
– Radar-based traffic monitoring
– Blind-spot alerts
– Automotive-style lighting signals
– Connected smart helmet technology
– Head-up display smart glasses

As cities become more crowded and electric bicycles become increasingly popular, safety technology is becoming a key factor in the future of urban transportation.

Volkswagen Smart eBike Price and Availability

Despite its advanced technology, the Volkswagen eBike range is positioned alongside premium electric bicycles rather than luxury vehicles.

The Sport models start at £3,999 in the UK (approximately $5,300), including the Smart View rear camera system. The Smart Helmet and Smart Glasses are available separately, priced at £499 each (around $670).

The Volkswagen-licensed eBikes developed by n+ are available through selected partners and online retailers.

With features previously reserved for cars, Volkswagen’s latest electric bicycle shows how automotive safety innovations are moving beyond four wheels and into the future of micromobility.
