McMurtry Spéirling PURE Defies Gravity—And It’s Yours for €1.15m

McMurtry Automotive has officially unveiled the production version of the Spéirling PURE, transforming one of the world’s most extraordinary electric prototypes into a customer-ready hyper track car. After nearly a decade of development and thousands of kilometers of testing, the British company has refined its revolutionary fan-assisted EV into a machine that promises Formula 1-level performance in a package designed for private owners.

Replacing 95% of the prototype’s components while retaining its groundbreaking Downforce-on-Demand™ technology, the Spéirling PURE delivers astonishing acceleration, record-breaking grip, and a surprisingly approachable ownership experience.

Production Car Built Around Performance

The production-spec Spéirling PURE remains true to McMurtry’s original vision of creating the ultimate lightweight electric track car. While the vehicle has grown slightly to accommodate a much larger battery pack and improved usability, its performance figures remain almost unbelievable.

Key specifications include:

– 1,000 hp dual rear-mounted electric motors
– 0-60 mph in just 1.55 seconds
– Top speed of 190 mph (306 km/h)
– 100 kWh battery pack
– Approximately 1,350 kg curb weight
– Limited production of just 100 units
– Starting price: £995,000/~$1.3m/~€1.15m

Despite gaining around 300 kg over the prototype, the larger battery significantly extends track sessions while preserving the car’s blistering performance.

Revolutionary Downforce-on-Demand

What truly separates the Spéirling PURE from every other performance EV is its patented Downforce-on-Demand™ system.

Instead of relying solely on aerodynamic wings, two high-speed fans beneath the car create a low-pressure zone that literally pulls the car toward the track surface. The result is up to 2,000 kg of downforce from 0 mph, something impossible with conventional aerodynamics.

This allows the car to:

– Generate up to 3G in corners
– Achieve 3G under braking
– Maintain grip even during low-speed corners
– Remain stable even if the car spins

The system also creates a distinctive jet-like sound as air exits the rear, giving the electric hypercar a character unlike almost any other EV.

This technology has already enabled one of the most remarkable automotive demonstrations ever performed: driving completely upside down.

A Record-Breaking Pedigree

Long before reaching production, the Spéirling became famous for humiliating some of the fastest race cars ever built.

Its growing list of achievements includes:

– Setting the Goodwood Festival of Speed Hillclimb record in 2022
– Breaking the Top Gear Test Track record previously held by a 2004 Formula 1 car
– Recording an astonishing lap at Laguna Seca
– Becoming the first car to successfully drive upside down

These performances established McMurtry as one of the most innovative names in high-performance electric vehicles.

Nearly Every Component Has Been Redesigned

Although the production model closely resembles the prototype, McMurtry says approximately 95% of its components are new.

Major upgrades include:

Larger 100 kWh Battery

The prototype’s 60 kWh battery has been replaced by a new 100 kWh modular battery pack using Molicel P50B NCA 21700 cells.

The larger pack allows approximately 40-50 km (25-31 miles) of intense circuit driving before requiring a recharge.

Charging from 20% to 95% takes between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on charger output and ambient temperature.

More Powerful Powertrain

The production car receives:

– New Helix electric motors
– Increased torque
– Upgraded gearbox
– Improved regenerative braking with up to 200 kW of energy recovery
– Relocated cooling system for better efficiency and aerodynamics

Improved Chassis

McMurtry also redesigned the carbon-fiber monocoque to improve both safety and usability.

Updates include:

– More cabin space
– Easier entry and exit
– Wider door opening
– Improved driver visibility
– Longer wheelbase to accommodate the larger battery

Additional practical touches include integrated headlights, brake lights, indicators, and hazard lights, allowing the car to participate more easily in track-day events.

Designed Around the Driver

Unlike many extreme track-only machines, the Spéirling PURE has been engineered to make ownership as straightforward as possible.

Each customer receives a custom-molded racing seat, similar to those used in endurance prototypes, while the cockpit features a bespoke steering wheel and a central display showing fan settings, battery state, temperatures, speed, and power output.

The rear wing even incorporates a small storage compartment large enough to hold a racing helmet and HANS device.

Optional air conditioning and electronically adjustable dampers are also available.

Track Days Without a Full Race Team

McMurtry says the Spéirling PURE can be operated at track events with little more than the driver and one assistant—an unusual claim in a segment where dedicated support crews are often required.

Owners also gain access to the McMurtry Owners Club, which offers: driver coaching, factory engineering support, international track-day events, technical workshops, exclusive development updates and opportunities to help shape future McMurtry vehicles.

The company has also developed an optional 100 kWh portable battery pack capable of charging the car at circuits without fast-charging infrastructure.

Eligible for Competitive Racing

The Spéirling PURE isn’t simply built for private track days.

McMurtry says the car is eligible for several competition series, including:

– Global Time Attack (USA)
– European Time Attack Masters
– GT1 Sports Club

Public Debut This Summer

The production Spéirling PURE will appear at the Goodwood Festival of Speed from July 9-12, before making its official North American debut at The Quail during Monterey Car Week on August 14.

Customer deliveries are scheduled to begin later this year, with production limited to just 100 examples worldwide.

A New Benchmark for Electric Performance

The Spéirling PURE represents far more than another ultra-fast electric hypercar. By reviving and modernizing fan-car technology, McMurtry has tackled one of the biggest limitations facing today’s high-performance EVs—mechanical grip.

With 1,000 horsepower, 2,000 kg of instant downforce, record-breaking performance, and a customer-focused ownership experience, the production Spéirling PURE stands as one of the most technically ambitious electric vehicles ever created.
