Opel has unveiled early details of a new all-electric SUV positioned in the highly competitive C-segment, signaling a major step in its long-term electrification strategy. The project, revealed ahead of Stellantis Investor Day 2026, is expected to broaden Opel’s SUV portfolio and accelerate its shift toward fully electric mobility.
Scheduled for a potential market launch in 2028, the upcoming C-SUV will sit alongside existing models such as the Opel Grandland, Opel Frontera, and Opel Mokka, strengthening the brand’s presence in one of Europe’s most important vehicle segments.
Fast-Track Development Through Global Collaboration
The new electric SUV will be developed through an expanded collaboration between Opel, Stellantis, and Leapmotor. The partnership aims to significantly reduce development timelines, with the project targeting completion in under two years—an unusually rapid pace for a new vehicle program.
Engineering will be led from Opel’s headquarters in Rüsselsheim, Germany, with additional support from international teams based in China. This global approach is intended to combine European engineering standards with faster innovation cycles enabled by Chinese EV technology.
Shared Platform, Distinct Opel Identity
While the new model is expected to utilize core components from Leapmotor’s latest electric architecture and battery systems, Opel will retain control over key elements that define its brand identity. These include exterior and interior design, driving dynamics, chassis tuning, lighting systems, and seating comfort.
This blend of shared technology and brand-specific engineering is designed to deliver competitive efficiency while maintaining Opel’s distinct character in the European market.
Production Plans and European Manufacturing
Production of the new C-SUV is currently under evaluation within Stellantis’ European manufacturing network. One leading candidate is the Zaragoza plant in Spain, a facility with a long history of Opel production, including the iconic Opel Corsa.
Leveraging existing infrastructure could help optimize costs and accelerate time-to-market, aligning with Stellantis’ broader strategy of scaling EV production across multiple brands.
Strategic Importance for Opel and Stellantis
This project represents more than just a new model launch. It highlights Opel’s growing role within Stellantis as a driver of electrification and value creation. At the same time, it underscores the increasing importance of partnerships like the one with Leapmotor in navigating the fast-evolving global EV landscape.
Feasibility studies and pre-development work are already underway, while discussions continue regarding a broader industrial collaboration between the companies. Final agreements remain subject to approvals and further negotiations.
